10 years ago, we packed up our lives and moved 10,000 km away from home. We left our very stable jobs and moved to Australia with hardly any friends, no jobs, and just one Airbnb booked for us.

I never thought I’d leave my big family and move away like this. But when Rajesh came to me and said, “What do you think about us moving to Canada or Australia?”, my first thought was, “I think I’d like the snow. Canada would be good!” (PS: I would have hated it) 😂

But I was also hooked on MasterChef Australia at the time. I was so amazed by participants as young as 23–25, people our age, following their passion and baking and cooking such incredible food. I just couldn’t comprehend how, at that age, they had so much freedom to pursue what they wanted.

So I said, “Yeah, I think Australia sounds good. Let’s move there!” 😂

Rajesh, the research guy that he is, did all the paperwork, got us our PR, and off we went.

When I was deciding on the menu, I thought I should make this pecan tart — the one that was set as a challenge for the contestants on MasterChef Australia by Gareth Whitton (buy his book if you're into tarts 😉)

So this week, you’ll all be celebrating 10 years of us moving to Australia with this smoked pecan and butterscotch tart. ❤️

It still needs a little fine-tuning, but I’ll get there by Saturday. 😉

This picture got a lot of love yesterday. Yes, it’s a great picture, but what it didn’t show was everything that went wrong behind the scenes.

Of the two strawberry pies I made, I dropped one whole pie. And of the second, only three slices were good enough to sell—the rest were stuck to the bottom of the pan, which the chickens happily savoured. 😅

Four hours of slow-roasting strawberries, rotating them every 30 minutes… down the drain.

And that wasn’t all.

Burnt a whole lot of bread.
Overproofed some.
Forgot to put aside some pre-orders.
Overfilled a tray of cinnamon rolls, which completely messed up the way they proofed.
The tart dough which works perfectly everytime just didn't want to look pretty

Basically, a lot went wrong.

All of this is to say: social media is a highlight reel. We see the beautiful finished product—but rarely the disasters, the wasted ingredients, the mistakes, the stress, and the hours of work that didn’t make it to the final picture.

I know this. We all know this, but we just can’t stop comparing, and that’s social media for you!

If, like me, you are in that loop of social media doom, know that you are only seeing the highlight.

Anyway, thanks for all your support yesterday. Enjoy the last pic of Misty's death stare.
Be back next week with something new. 😉

Fancy a new treat this weekend? Rum baba, or as the French call it baba au rhum.

Apart from lots of rest last week I watched quite a few videos, videos of makers, making things from heart(not trend chasers), measuring rum like I measure chilli powder in my curries. 🤣🤣
I don't like watching long videos, but It was a just a joy to see these people working in kitchen, alone, sometimes with help, and producing food that all their customers queue up to buy.

This one host said "you know what's good about selling good food? It makes people happy, sweet things makes people happy"

Of course everything in moderation is good for everyone right?!
In one of the video saw this simple but delicious dessert a yeasted cake baked till golden and then dunked in a orange and rum syrup.
I was like I have to make that, I think that will be something different my customers will love. It is soft, it is squishy, it is juicy, it is sweet and may be a little boozy 😉

Bring a box if you want to take it home and savour it, or eat it right away at one of our stall this Saturday. 🤤🤤

A little history of this cake: apparently a Polish King found their version of Babak(Gugelhupf) a bit too dry, when exiled in Paris, he asked his pastry to improvise it, and voila dunking the babka in rum did it for him. 🤷

PS : the black dots is not dirt btw🤦 it's pure vanilla seeds from the vanilla pods
