Understanding CMPA starts with recognising that not all allergies look the same.Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) can present in two different ways, and the timing of symptoms is one of the key differences.
IgE-mediated CMPA
Symptoms usually appear quickly — within minutes to a couple of hours after consuming dairy.
These reactions can include hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, or in rare cases anaphylaxis, and require urgent medical assessment.
Non-IgE CMPA
Symptoms are typically delayed, often appearing 24–72 hours after dairy exposure.
They can look quite different and may include reflux, eczema, diarrhoea or constipation, mucous in stools, congestion, unsettled sleep, or vomiting.
Because symptoms can be delayed and less obvious, non-IgE allergies are sometimes harder to recognise.
Understanding the pattern of symptoms helps guide the right next steps and ensures families receive the most appropriate support.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. With the right guidance, families are able to find a feeding approach that works well for their child.
