What if understanding the horse's brain changes how we train?

Our next Two Athletes. One Future. conversation takes us into the equine nervous system, learning and behaviour with Dr Stephen Peters.

❓What happens beneath the behaviour we see?
❓How does a horse experience pressure, predictability or uncertainty?
❓What helps learning happen, and what might get in the way?

On 29 October, we’ll explore these questions through the lens of neuroscience and what they might mean for the way we train, manage and partner our horses.

Because the more we understand about how the horse experiences the world, the better equipped we are to ask: How can I do better?

Here's something remarkable about the horse's digestive system: a large part of the energy a horse gets from forage isn't produced by the horse alone.

Horses are hindgut fermenters, which means the microbes living in the caecum and colon help break down the structural carbohydrates in forage. During that process, they produce compounds called volatile fatty acids, which the horse can then use as an important source of energy. Those microbial communities are also involved in producing B vitamins and other compounds that interact with the wider body.

It's one of the reasons we're so interested in the microbiome at McDowells. Nutrition isn't simply a matter of what goes into the feed bucket. It's also about the living ecosystem responsible for helping the horse make use of it.

The more science learns about that ecosystem, the more fascinating the humble horse gut becomes 🐎

🏆 THE RESULTS 🏆

Congratulations to all of our riders and horses. There were some fabulous results across the day, from Preparatory right through to Medium, and of course our very sweet little Lead Rein combination. 💙

A huge congratulations to everyone who placed, achieved a PB, tried a new level, brought out a new horse, or simply got down that centre line. That’s what these club days are all about!

A big thank you again to our judges Gillian Hill and Karen Barker for giving their time and expertise, to Rachel Carlton for help with scoring and to everyone who helped make the day run so smoothly. 🙏🫶

What a lovely day at Blayney! ☀️🐴

A few snaps from today; blue skies, beautiful horses and ponies and plenty of smiles.

It was especially wonderful to see riders of all ages and levels out there enjoying their dressage. From our littlest lead rein competitor through to our more experienced combinations, this is exactly what our club days are all about. Getting out there, having a go and enjoying your sand dancing partner. 💙

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, to our super judges Gill snd Karen, Nicole and the wonderful Carcoar & District Pony Club chefs, the committee superstars and volunteers who gave their time to make the day happen. We simply couldn’t run these days without you. 🫶🙏

And how good was that sunshine after all the winter weather! ☀️
