This is probably the hardest post we’ve ever had to write: to share that we are handing over the keys of Phil’s Pies and Pastries to new owners, Neil and Alana, after 17.5 years.
It is such a bittersweet moment that Phil is hanging up his apron after serving the Berwick and wider community after all these years. After 45 years working as a baker, this has certainly not been an easy decision.
In 2009, Phil and Tonie purchased the little corner shop at Parkhill and transformed it into the thriving pie shop it is today. Phil led the kitchen while Tonie ran the front of house, serving our wonderful customers and caring for our staff. From the beginning, everything was made from scratch with a passion for authentic, homemade pastries and cakes.
In 2024, our family received the devastating news that Tonie had been diagnosed with GBM, an aggressive form of brain cancer. This certainly shocked everyone who knew her and ultimately meant that Phil’s priority had to shift.
A couple of months ago, an opportunity to sell the shop came along and, after much prayer and consideration, the decision was made that it was time to pass Phil’s Pies and Pastries on to new owners.
As one chapter closes, we want to thank our beautiful staff for your hard work, dedication and friendship over the years. Thank you to our reps and suppliers for providing the quality ingredients that made our products possible. And finally, to our amazing and incredible customers. Thank you for allowing us to serve you for 17.5 years. For stopping to have a conversation with us and for sharing about your day. For buying your favourite pie or cake and for continuing to be loyal over the years. Without you all, Phil’s Pies and Pastries would not be the local pie shop it is today.
May God bless you all as we close this chapter in our lives.
Many blessings,
Phil, Tonie, Lauren & Nathan
