📣 👉 Calling all Ballina and Alstonville cafes!

Have you heard the word? Our campaign is expanding!

Join the Lennox cafes who are already providing a HuskeeSwap service to their customers and reducing single use one cup at a time.

All cafes need to participate are float cups (to swap with customer cups) and retail cups so that anyone who needs a cup to swap can buy one.

Council will subsidise 12 float cups free of charge to registered cafes. We also help promote the program.

Let’s all make a difference, one cup at a time!

Cafes can register for HuskeeSwap by heading to huskee.co/swap

☕ COFFEE IS ON US! ☕☕

We’re keen as beans to announce Lennox Head’s HuskeeSwap activation launch week from 12-18 April.

In partnership with Huskee, we’re shouting FREE coffee with every Huskee cup swap for the first 50 orders at each participating café:

☕ Seed & Husk
☕ Quattro Beachfront Italian
☕ Williams St Kitchen & Bar
☕ Shelter
☕ Kiosk Lennox Beach

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

1️⃣ Bring your HuskeeCup or buy one
2️⃣ Hand it over each time you order (no need to wash it, it will be set aside to be hygienically cleaned)
2️⃣ Receive your coffee in a fresh, sanitised HuskeeCup!

Drop by and say hello at the Huskee stall which will be set up along Ballina Street in Lennox Head from 8am until Midday from Mon 12 to Wed 14 April.

By making reusables more convenient and hygienic, we hope to reduce the amount of single-use coffee cups going to landfill. For more information, visit: https://ballina.nsw.gov.au/business-waste-programs

Some exciting news and a great opportunity for our Northern Rivers foodie businesses!

Foodbank and Y Waste are partnering to help increase food donations by creating a whole new way for food outlets like yours, to give their end of day surplus meals to those in need.

How does it work?

1. The YWaste app allows food outlets to post ready to eat meals for donation (as well as for sale at a discounted price).
2. The Foodbank Partners (food relief agencies/charities) provide codes to clients which are used to purchase the meals for free.
3. Clients enter the code into the YWaste app to ‘purchase’ a donated meal and pick it up directly from the food outlet.

How does it benefit your business?

As clients pick up the meal directly from the food outlet, it enables meals which can’t be collected by an agency, to be provided directly to someone in need. It provides an additional food donation opportunity for businesses, reduces food waste and helps those in need to get extra meals direct from the donor.

Please see the attached flyer for more details. If you’re interested, contact Sarah Pennell at Foodbank - phone 02 9056 7030 or email [email protected] or visit the Foodbank website.

What a fantastic effort! This collective of Northern Rivers foodie businesses are taking action to reduce the impact of their business by diverting food from landfill and avoiding single use plastics.

To date, we have sixty five businesses taking action to capture over 160 tonnes of food waste before it becomes landfill. This is equivalent to 304 tonnes of carbon- enough to power a household for seventy five years.

It significantly reduces the amount of commercial and industrial waste going to landfill by steering everyone towards a circular economy framework. Circular Cafes aims to influence how business is done, support positive change and inspire others to do the same.

Businesses are also saving money, and are feeling pretty good about the positive changes they are making. We take our hats off to these forward thinking, innovative businesses. These are just some of them!

Cafes and foodie businesses play such an important role in our communities, providing employment, supporting local food systems, purchasing locally, and enhancing our sense of community.

In building a better more sustainable future for the Northern Rivers, we believe there was no better place to start than with this innovative, adaptable and influential industry.

Since our kick off we have been delighted by the calibre of business that have joined the program. We want you to know that you are part of something big.

Yes we are getting food waste out of landfill, yes we are looking to provide better alternatives than single use coffee cups, but what we are ultimately building is a new benchmark for how we do business in the Northern Rivers 💛

Meet Robbie Hill from 👋

Robbie is a forward thinking member of Circular Cafes. Not only is he capturing any food waste generated from his cafe, he is also looking to support other businesses where food waste solutions are a bit more tricky. Robbie captures what he can and feeds it back into the local food cycle through regenerative farming, storing carbon and increasing soil health.

Thanks for being part of the movement and making awesome things happen! 💛

Business for Good

Employing over 8000 people in the Northern Rivers region, food businesses are significant contributors to the regional economy and play an influential role in our communities’ everyday lives.

Working as a powerful collective, food businesses in the Northern Rivers now have a unique opportunity to influence how business is done in our region, and redefine the current business model, to one that reaps the benefits of a regenerative circular economy.

And it all starts with food waste.
