Mayfair’s origins date back to 1870, when soon to be elected Mayor of Port Adelaide David Bower (1812-1898), commissioned and built what is now known as the Bower Buildings. In this group of heritage shop fronts, Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie was founded and
continues to operate as a bakery after 150 years of trading. Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie is presently and has always been, a proudly South Australian family owned and operated business. In 150 years, Mayfair has seen an ever-changing landscape, from the use of the ports, Australian outlaws, 2 world wars, the Great depression, the GFC, Spanish Flu and most recently the coronavirus pandemic. In a forever changing world, Mayfair has remained a favourite at home in Port Adelaide. Mayfair’s tradition started by feeding the sailors, sea captains and warfies, as tall ships sailed through what is now the Port Canal. Continuing to operate as one of Australia’s oldest and most loved bakeries, it’s clear that Mayfair’s recipes and traditional baking secrets have kept customers coming back to the Port. Like many changing times in Port Adelaide, from the last tall ship, to containerisation, one place has remained true to their roots and a lighthouse for all hungry travellers, Mayfair. Mayfair Bakery and Patisserie proudly calls Port Adelaide and South Australia home after 150 years.
