The devotion to the Madonna of Montevergine is one of the most popular with the people of Campania and there are many thousands of them here in Adelaide. Long ago on 15 August 1955 a small group of men came together at the home of Mr Orlando Saccone, to discuss the possibility of bringing a painting to the Madonna to Adelaide. Like Mr Saccone, they

were all great devotees of the Madonna Schiavone, being formerly of Avellino, Benevento and Naples. When they put their idea to the Capuchin Priests, it was greeted with great enthusiasm so a small painting of the Madonna was ordered from the firm "Prescitelli of Florence" to be sent to the St Francis of Assisi Church Newton. In a short time the painting arrived of "Mamma Bruna", as her devotees called her. On October 1956 came the first solemn celebration of the festa in honour of the Madonna of Montevergine

The patrons being a committed group of people who have shown their dedication to the Madonna by working tirelessly in order to present one of Adelaide’s most famous cultural and religious festivals. Held on the last Sunday of September it attracts people from all over Australia. Starting with Mass at the Hectorville Church the devotees walk some kilometers to St. Whereas mass was originally celebrated in the church proper it has grown to such an extent that the committee now hires a huge marquee. La Festa Della Madonna Di Motevergine now fills the Marquee and the church combined. The mass which is usually conducted by a visiting priest from Italy is piped into the church which is filled to capacity. Once mass is over the congregation is blessed by the priest and then the celebrations begin. Families and friends get together over pizza, pasta or whatever else is on offer on the day. Refreshments include soft drinks, beer wine, water and of course coffee. It’s always a good idea to leave some room for cakes and gelati. There is something for everyone including souvenirs and mementos of the day. Festivities continue throughout the day and into the night with a host of entertainers culminating with spectacular fireworks.

Un altro anno e passato e con dei membri del Comitato della Madonna di Montevergine ci troviamo di nuovo a preparare dei piccoli fiori per essrere distribuiti a tutte le Mamme che verranno a Messa oggi.

Voglio augurare una Bellissima Giornata delle Mamme a tutte le Mamme che sono con noi e anche a quelle che ci guardano da lassu!
