This little roll has been feeding Vietnam for over 70 years — and most Australians have never heard of it. 🥖
What you're looking at is Bánh Mì Que — photographed fresh off a street stall in Hải Phòng, Vietnam. Sold in bundles of 5, served with pâté, butter, and chilli sauce. Gone in minutes.
A little history:
Bánh Mì Que ("que" = stick) was born in Northern Vietnam when French colonial bakers met Vietnamese resourcefulness. Instead of the larger, fluffier Southern-style bánh mì you know, Northerners made them thinner, crispier, and designed for snacking — not stuffing. Hải Phòng in particular became famous for this style. Street vendors would stack hundreds per tray and sell them by the bundle before breakfast. Same recipe, same ritual, for generations.
The genius of it? That crunch. Shatter-thin crust, airy inside, just enough structure to scoop through pâté and butter without falling apart.
And honestly? We think Adelaide is overdue for one. 👀
