The Washington State Apple Advertising Commission was created by an act of the Washington State Legislature in 1937 at the request of the apple industry, making it one of the oldest and largest commodity commissions in the United States. Under statutory authority, the Commission collects a mandatory assessment levied against all fresh apple shipments. The assessment rate is established by a refere

ndum of commercial apple growers in the state, and remains at the same level yearly until changed by growers. Since 1937, growers have increased the assessment 13 times from its original 1 cent per box to as high as 40 cents per 42-lb box. Then in 2003 a lawsuit restructured the Commission and at this time the assessment is 3.5 cents per box. The Commission has a 14-member board of directors, nine of whom are elected by the apple growers in specified districts and four of whom are elected by the apple shippers and marketers in specified districts. One is the Director of Agriculture. Each Commissioner is elected for a three-year term. The Commission is considered a governmental agency since it is state-mandated, yet is governed and totally funded by growers under the supervision of the Director of Agriculture who approves the budget and sits on the Board of Directors. Currently no promotions are being implemented in the US, but are implemented in more than 30 countries overseas where Washington apples are sold.

This insanely easy Washington apple dump cake only has 6 ingredients and requires zero mixing🍎🍏

Ingredients:
5 medium Washington apples (about 5 cups chopped)
2 tbsp brown sugar, packed
2 tsp ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
1 box yellow cake mix
¾ cup butter, melted
Optional Toppings: pecans, vanilla ice cream

Direction:
1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Core and chop Washington apples into about ½ inch pieces. If you love cooked apples, you can use 6 apples in this recipe. Transfer to a medium mixing bowl.
2. Sprinkle brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt over apples. Mix with a spoon or your hand until all apple pieces are coated with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
3. Spray 9×13 inch pan with cooking spray, and then pour apples into pan. Spread into an even layer.
4. Sprinkle cake mix over apples, gently shake the pan so the cake mix evenly spreads out over apples. Drizzle melted butter over the cake mix, ensuring all the mix is covered with butter, as the uncovered mix will be dry and crumbly after baking. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the cake mix is golden brown.
5. Serve with vanilla ice cream and pecans if desired.

This BBQ Chicken Flatbread with Washington apples works just as well for parties as it does for busy weeknights. How to make it?

Ingredients:
1 large flatbread (about full pizza size)
¼ cup BBQ sauce
½ cups shredded Swiss or mozzarella cheese
4-6 ounces cooked chicken
¼ cup thinly sliced red onion (this is about a small handful)
¼ cup frozen corn, thawed
½ whole medium-sized Washington apples
Optional garnish: Cilantro
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Chop chicken and apples into about ½ in. pieces.
2. Place flatbread on a cookie sheet. Assemble flatbread by evenly spreading BBQ sauce over the flatbread. Add more if needed. Sprinkle about ½ of the cheese over the BBQ sauce. Top with chicken, red onion, corn, and apple. Finish up by sprinkling the remaining cheese over the toppings. This will hold flatbread and toppings together.
3. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until crust is browned and cheese is bubbly. Cut into 12 pieces and top with cilantro if desired.

Note: You can also add the chopped apple after cooking if you want crunchy apple pieces.
