YIAYIA's TABLE

YIAYIA's TABLE 41 Klipfontein (Durban) Road, Mowbray. A Greek bakery in the heart of Little Mowbray in Cape Town, s She lived to the blessed age of 96.

Our Yiayia, Elli Parolis, is the inspiration behind the idea of YIAYIA’s TABLE. She arrived in South Africa from the island of Lesvos in Greece in 1937 as a mail order bride to marry Jimmy Parolis, an immigrant from Lesvos, who had established himself in Cape Town a decade earlier and was ready to marry a local girl from his village, Plomari. After family discussions and agreement, Elli boarded a

ship destined for Cape Town where she met and married Jimmy and started her life with him in Mowbray growing their businesses and bringing up their 3 children. They owned and ran a Tea Room / supermarket and then butchery, in the very space our store is situated today. Yiayia Elli loved her family fiercely and showed her selfless devotion to them by her strong presence and her passion to cook and feed them. This passion extended to all their friends, relatives, staff and the wider community. Right up until her final days she continued to feed her family (including 5 grand-children and 7 great grand-children) insisting they eat every time they popped in to visit, sitting around her yellow kitchen table sharing good wholesome food and loving conversations. It is in this spirit that YIAYIA’s TABLE was established - to continue her legacy: the traditions, the passion, the secrets and the recipes, all made with love, passed down from our Yiayia to you.

It describes the feeling of being around a table with people you enjoy — sharing food, conversation, and time.

Greek Word of the Day 🇬🇷

Φαγητό που γεμίζει την ψυχή
Pronounced fa-yee-TO poo ghe-MEE-zee teen psee-HEE

It means food that feeds the soul — the kind of hearty, comforting, home-cooked meals that leave you feeling nourished long after the plate is empty.

At Yiayia’s Table, this is the food we grew up with. Simple ingredients, generous portions, and recipes made with care, meant to be shared around the table with the people who matter most. 💛

With the rush of the school run or meetings, some mornings don’t allow for sitting down and enjoying a slow breakfast.
An original koulouri and a coffee is part of everyday Greek life.

Some people start the day looking for something lighter.
Our yoghurt bowls are made with a real thick, hand-strained Greek yoghurt, topped with either your choice of Sour cherry 🍒 preserve or organic raw honey, 🍯 and then we garnish this with a sprinkle of baklava nuts.

There is no better way to get the morning started on the right note.
Refreshing, absolutely nourishing, and extremely satisfying.

Everyone’s breakfast idea looks different. At Yiayia’s Table, we’ve got you covered.

Not every breakfast needs to be a big production.

Sometimes it can be just a Spanakopita and a coffee.
Golden flaky phyllo pastry wrapped around a deliciously creamy spinach, feta, and herb filling.

The best breakfasts can sometimes be the simplest ones.

Which flavour do you prefer?

And yes, in Greece, a phyllo pastry pie is a very common breakfast option.😉

Some people don’t want to think too much about what to eat in the mornings.
All you need is your choice of eggs (scrambled, fried or poached) served in a warm sesame seed koulouri bread ring, with grilled tomato on a bed of wild rocket and creamy feta on the side.
Simple, satisfying and very Greek.
It’s the kind of breakfast that hits the spot leaving you satisfied and full.
Everyone’s breakfast idea looks different.

How do you prefer your eggs?

🍳 Some mornings call for something substantial and filling.
A proper two egg omelette made fresh to order and built around what you feel like eating on the day.

Add fillet steak or grilled chicken fillet or smoked chicken for that extra protein and flavour. Add more eggs if you want to make it bigger and more filling. Build your omelette to suit your individual taste.

Everyone’s breakfast idea looks different. At Yiayia’s Table, we’ve got you covered.

Some days call for something fresh with a little bite.

🥗 Our wild rocket salad brings together peppery rocket leaves, roasted beetroot, creamy goat’s cheese and a light extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar dressing that lets every ingredient keep its character. It is vibrant, satisfying, and perfect for when you want something light with the heat we have had, but still full of flavour.
Like everything in our kitchen, the focus is always on quality ingredients and balance.

And if you are feeling hungrier, then you can easily turn this salad into a meal combo with one of our delicious handmade pies, creating the perfect mix of freshness and comfort on one plate.

Greek Word of the Day 🇬🇷
Οικογένεια (Oikogéneia)
Pronounced ee-ko-YEN-ya
Meaning: Family

In Yiayia’s kitchen, food was never made for one person. It was always cooked with the whole family in mind. Dishes were placed in the middle of the table, and passed from hand to hand, and everyone was expected to take a little of everything.

That same spirit still lives on in our office kitchen today, which was once our Yiayia’s Kitchen. Every day at lunchtime, we gather around Yiayia’s original yellow table eating lunch together, just as Yiayia would have done with us.
Food brings people together and it is always best, when shared. 💛🇬🇷

Baklava was never something Yiayia made in a hurry. It was a quiet ritual in her kitchen, with layers of phyllo pastry laid down one by one, each brushed gently with butter, each sheet treated with care as though it mattered — because it did!

The nuts were always chopped by hand, never processed into dust, and the syrup made with real organic raw honey and simmered slowly until it reached just the right consistency, and the citrus and spice flavours were delicately infused in the syrup.

Only once the pastry had slow baked to a deep golden colour would she pour the syrup, letting it settle naturally into every fold and layer.

At Yiayia’s Table, we continue to make Baklava in this same spirit. Fresh ingredients combined with technique, tradition, and immense patience. 💛
