Meeting Grace Stevens
It was such an honour to meet the incredible Grace Stevens — a true pioneer of cake decorating in South Africa, as well as an accomplished author and teacher.
Her knowledge and passion absolutely blew me away. I learned so much about the rich history of cake artistry and sugar craft in South Africa, and it was such a privilege to hear her stories and chat with someone who has contributed so much to our industry.
Grace, thank you for so generously opening your beautiful studio to me so I could host my Wafer Paper Flowers class, and for your incredible hospitality.
Your warmth and generosity made the experience even more special.

🌸 WAFER PAPER PEONY CLASS! 🌸

What a special day at the beautiful Grace Stevens 🇿🇦 Studio in Plumstead, Cape Town! 🤍

A lovely group of ladies came together to learn the art of creating these delicate, lifelike wafer paper peonies.

From absolute beginners to experienced professionals in the cake industry, everyone created something truly beautiful — and that is one of my favourite things about teaching.

There is a special moment in every class when a student looks at the flower in their hands and suddenly realises:

“I made this!” 🥹🌸

Watching their faces light up with that little moment of amazement makes all the preparation, planning and teaching completely worth it.

There is a moment in every class that I absolutely treasure. 🥹🌸

It’s when a student looks at their flower… and suddenly it hits them:

“I made this.”

You can see the amazement in their eyes. The little look of disbelief, pride and awe as they realise that the beautiful flower in front of them was created by their own hands.

And honestly, that moment makes it all worth it. ❤️
All the planning.
All the preparation.
All the testing, tweaking and worrying about every little detail.
It all fades away when I see that look on a student’s face.
Because teaching isn’t just about showing someone how to make a flower.
It’s about helping them discover that they can create something beautiful too. 🌸✨
And that will always be my favourite part of teaching.
