Dog Tag Bakery Dog Tag Bakery, Inc. is a non-profit bakery that runs an education and employment program for veterans with disabilities, military spouses, and caregivers.

Here's how our venture works: beginning in the Fall of 2014, Dog Tag Bakery will hire a cohort of wounded veterans and their spouses each year to complete a program that provides both substantive work experience and a tailor made curriculum at the School of Continuing Studies at Georgetown University. During the day, veterans will operate the bakery: learning skills from baking to sales to busines

s management. At the same time, they will be pursuing a course of study that will offer training in entrepreneurship and other skills needed for the successful pursuit of a job or a small business venture of their own. The linchpin to our program is our bakery, located right in the heart of Georgetown just past the intersection of M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. This 4,200 square-foot building will provide a retail location for the bakery and café, housing a production/baking area, a training-and-meeting room, and an office space from which to manage the business.

15/12/2022

In this installment of Voices of Dog Tag, we’re featuring Cohort 14 Alum and Navy Spouse Shamonda Strother. Shamonda describes herself as bold, open-minded, humble, and motivated by empowering others. Shamonda is a trained nurse who has always had a passion for people. Shamonda says, “I’m using the compassion I learned as a nurse alongside my passion for the arts to bring fun, fashion, and music to my community. My goal is to provide fun as a part of growth.”

When asked what a defining moment in her life has been, Shamonda says, “There was a point where I realized I had done what I was supposed to do with my life as a nurse and my passion drove me towards becoming an entrepreneur. My passion pushed me to follow my heart no matter what.” Shamonda is proud of being a wife and mother as well as the work she does with her organization, You Can Fit Out 2.

Christmas is Shamonda’s favorite holiday. “I would always do Christmas events because everyone comes together for giving.” Now, every summer, Shamonda hosts a Christmas in July event to give back to women survivors of s*x trafficking as well as houseless members of her community, or as Shamonda likes to say “our friends on the street.” Shamonda designed this event to “bring that warmth that happens with Christmas to the rest of the year. It’s a creative way for people to come together to serve.”

Shamonda applied to Dog Tag as a way to transition her career: “I was going into a new industry and I wanted to take my creativity to the next level with strategic business planning.” During the program, Shamonda says she enjoyed the balance of wellness and academia. “As a nurse, I appreciated the wellness, and the academia gave real-life actionable techniques to continue to build my organization.” Since graduating, Shamonda has received several grants for her organization and was accepted into SCAD Atlanta’s Art and Design School to sharpen her skills in Creative Leadership. “Since I focus on creative leadership and performing arts, this will be a perfect fit for me!”

Thanks to you, we raised $13,245.50 on to support veterans with service-connected disabilities, military spouses, and caregivers–as well as an extra $25,000 thanks to CAVU’s generous match!

We can’t thank you enough for helping us overcome the challenges we’ve faced over the last year. Our 17th DC and 3rd Chicago cohorts begin in January 2023. Yesterday, you helped ensure our fellows will have the resources they need to rediscover purpose and find community now and in the future.

Again, thank you so much for making a success. Together, we are helping change the lives of veterans and military families.

Giving Tuesday 2022

Our goal this year for is to raise $12,500 in celebration of graduating 16 DC and 2 Chicago cohorts to date. That’s nearly 250 veterans and military families served to date—wow!

This year Dog Tag expanded our programming from DC to Chicago, increasing the number of individuals we serve each year. We need your help to ensure both programs remain impactful and life changing. Can you help give our fellows the best fellowship experience possible?

As a bonus, if we reach our goal CAVU will generously match all donations two-to-one, up to $25,000! We're so grateful to have partners like CAVU, who understand that investing in Dog Tag enhances our ability to help the individuals we serve change their lives. Can you help us raise the funds we need to unlock the match?

25/11/2022

In this installment of Voices of Dog Tag, we’re featuring Cohort 15 Alum and Army Spouse Syahidah Osman. Syahidah is a Singaporean-Malay artist and mother in Springfield, Virginia. She describes herself as curious, creative, and a go-getter, motivated by bringing awareness to issues in social justice. In her art, Syahidah uses different mediums to capture the human condition.

Before meeting her now husband, an active duty Army Engineer and Special Forces officer, Syahidah experienced a high-conflict divorce from her ex-husband in 2014. “It was traumatic and there were so many legal issues surrounding it. When I do art and I hear stories of other people going through similar difficulties it resonates in my work. I want to advocate for people experiencing abuse. There is help out there for you. You can move forward instead of staying in a toxic situation.”

Going through the Dog Tag Fellowship Program, Syahidah says, “the experience refined how I am as an artist. The storytelling and branding provided clarity for me on what kind of artist I am. I want to create art to raise awareness about social justice issues. I am using my artwork as a catalyst for change.” In her upcoming solo art exhibit at Arts in Color Studio in DC, Syahidah will donate part of the proceeds of her artwork sold to The Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington and their partner organization, Network for Victim Recovery of DC. Syahidah adds, “Art is unique in its capacity to enable visionary thinking and to bring communities and policymakers together to engage in challenging conversations.”

Looking forward, Syahidah is excited to travel and exhibit her art around the world. She is currently considering opening shows in London and internationally. “I love traveling, so whenever a part of the world calls, I’m interested in showing my work.” On continuing to deepen her social impact, Syahidah says “I’m interested in collaborating with other artists to continue to raise awareness for non-profit organizations contributing to change.”

Our Story

Dog Tag Bakery acts as a living business school for service-disabled veterans, military spouses, and caregivers. We empower our fellows to discover personal and professional fulfillment in the civilian world through an innovative five-month fellowship program. Held two times per year, our program is comprised of three main elements: education; hands-on learning; and career exploration. Fellows earn a certificate of business administration from Georgetown University’s School of Continuing Studies in classroom above our retail bakery. We bring that education to life through rotation - fellows spend nine hours per week rotating through Dog Tag Bakery’s various departments to learn the in and outs of running a small business. Lastly, fellows have the opportunity to explore a wide-variety of civilian career paths and hone both hard and soft skills through Learning Labs, a series of workshops and lectures. Wellness is a cornerstone of our program; from mindfulness to journaling, nutrition to yoga, we believe that our holistic, wellness-oriented approach allows fellows to be mentally ready to absorb the lessons and resources our program provides and lay the groundwork for their successful transition into civilian life.

In honor of the season of giving!

Last week, Potomac Soccer Association U14 Premier II team volunteered at Dog Tag Bakery in Georgetown. A non-profit organization that helps military veterans and their families.

To learn more about Dog Tag Bakery go to; https://www.dogtaginc.org/pages/about-us-our-story
Okay. This gorgeous and delicious cake was not part of our packing and shipping work. It's in the Dog Tag Bakery case this winter (it's also in my belly and on my thighs). Even the snowbeing is edible! Try it for yourself. DTB is on Grace Street in Georgetown - check their holiday hours and let me know before you visit! I'd love to meet you for breakfast - my fave rosemary honey biscuit egg sammich awaits your arrival.
Good fortune!
.
For 4 weeks I contributed to Dog Tag Bakery 's holiday packing and shipping work. I was excited to work for one of my fave breakfast cafés, which is also a nonprofit that serves veterans and military families.
The seasonal team was TRULY amazing! And there were days when DTB's admin and leadership staff - plus groups of volunteers - joined us.
We busted our buns assembling a number of awesome products for seasonal orders and gratitude gifts. And when I say "assembling," I mean we created the whole package - from the container itself to the arrangements in it!
Every day I was wow-ed by the thought and creativity that went into each box. The themes, the labels, the product, even the pretty crinkle paper and bows!
Lo and behold - what did my boss give me on my last day? My favorite collection: the BOX OF GOOD FORTUNE. I'd say it's about time that the stars align in my favor - right?
Grateful to have been part of such a fun work project and can't wait for their next!
🎁🥠🍪🍩🎁
Side note: the work was very physical. Day after day I was deeply grateful that my post-assault body and brain repaired well enough to do what it took for this job! I marveled at the fact that in April I could barely walk or think, much less do anything that required hours of standing, lifting, repetitive motion, etc.
2022 was a tough year, y'all! But the healing is real! Here's to more good fortune, dreams, wisdom, fun, comfort, adventure, gratitude, and soothing in 2023!
💚🙏🏼🕊
Thank you Dog Tag Bakery! You are by far our tastiest partner! 😋
So much love packed into these gift boxes -including a delicious treat from Dog Tag Bakery. We love making our traditional holiday visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center . We’ll be back with Mother’s Day gifts before you know it!
What a fantastic group of volunteers we had today at Dog Tag Bakery! In under an hour they packaged 100 gift sets which will be distributed tomorrow at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for loved ones of injured and healing service members.

To all who served, Packed with Purpose wishes you a happy Veterans Day. Today we'd like to highlight two of our Impact Partners that empower and employ veterans, military spouses, and veteran caregivers!

Dog Tag Bakery has been for veterans and their families since 2012. The Dog Tag Fellowship Program offers a combination of education and hands-on work experience for veterans, their families, and caregivers through the production of delicious baked goods at their cafe and shop. Program fellows engage in transformative education and gain key business skills from Georgetown University, making them competitively employable upon program graduation.

Veteran Roasters Cup O' Joe Coffee was founded with a very simple mission: find veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless and give them an opportunity to gain back their dignity while roasting some great coffee! In partnership with a Chicago roasting company, Passion House Coffee Roasters, Veteran Roasters trains and employs Chicagoland veterans to provide individual growth and provide skills, and employment opportunities in the growing coffee industry.

Dog Tag Bakery is known for its brownies and butterscotch blondies, but that's never really been its sole purpose. It's a living business school where service-disabled , military spouses, and caregivers can get a taste of running their own company.

RAND Corporation researchers worked to help Dog Tag Inc. better understand how its fellowship program shapes the careers and life trajectories of its alumni. Our experts interviewed nearly 50 people who had gone through the program. Every one of them described it as transformative.

"It really serves as a model for what other veteran-serving organizations can do," said Stephanie Holliday, a senior behavioral scientist at RAND who coauthored the study. "They're so invested in each individual person. They don't just let them go afterward; they really hold tight to this community."
