Baby Cayuga Ducklings have their first swim!

What should we name them? Taking suggestions in the comments!

One of our favorite times of year is raising baby duckies in spring. This year, we were lucky enough to snag some early babies who have been making messes and trouble in the brooder. They are certainly bonded to each other. They are also very load and very cute 🄰.

No—the news about a popular ā€œpasture-raisedā€ egg brand didn’t surprise me. šŸ“

And here’s why this conversation needs more nuance than most headlines allow.

Chickens cannot live on grass alone.
They don’t have a rumen like cows or goats, which means they cannot extract sufficient nutrition from pasture by itself.

Chickens require protein.

Here’s the reality most people don’t know:

• Laying hens need 16–18% protein feed (about 17 grams per day) to stay healthy and continue laying

• Even excellent pasture cannot reliably provide that for chickens, but especially at large scale

• Bugs and seeds help—but not nearly enough available as a food source year-round

• Winter makes foraging protein even less realistic

That means feed is not a failure. It’s a biological necessity.

Even on our small homestead—with birds that free-range pasture when it’s safe—we still provide a balanced, nutritious feed to meet their needs.

In our case, that looks like:

• Kalmbach feed from our local feed store

• Whole grains like split peas, corn, oats, and black oil sunflower seeds

• Pasture (or free-ranging) as a supplement, not the sole food source

Now, don’t get me wrong.
If a company markets itself in a way that intentionally misleads consumers, that’s a problem.

But it’s also worth asking:
How could eggs be produced at that scale using those practices alone?

Large operations and small-scale regenerative farms are not the same thing—and pretending they are only fuels confusion.
