Last month, we got to participate in the first-ever Historic Trades Festival at Peirce Mill. This event featured demonstrations and hands-on activities such as weaving Kente cloth, stone carving, pottery, rope making, and of course milling!

Peirce Mill was first built in the 1820s and at one point was one of at least eight mills along Rock Creek that local farmers would bring their grain to, to be ground into flour. But local milling declined sharply and so it closed. Today, thanks to the , basic milling operations have resumed and the wonderful Angela Kramer is helping to revitalize interest in local grains, the rich history of Peirce Mill, & the art of historic trades.

We've long been advocates for revitalizing the local grain economy so it was exciting to be part of this event featuring milling (and other trades) and giving people an opportunity to try some of our products featuring local grains.

We buy locally grown & milled grains from Small Valley Milling and & incorporate them into many of our breads & pastries. We're long-time members of and work closely with the Grain Stand. We've even taught classes to fellow bakers & home bakers on how to successfully incorporate local grains.
