There’s always room!

In the early 1960s, when Dan Gill was just 9 years old, he and his best friend, Archie Shaw, went to a classmate's birthday party in New York. When they arrived, the host's mother told them there were no more chairs. Then she said Dan could come in, but Archie could not. Archie was turned away because he was Black.

Dan refused to leave his friend behind. He even offered to give Archie his chair and sit on the floor instead, but the woman still said no. So the two boys picked up their gifts, left together, and went back to Dan's house instead. Years later, Dan said, "At my house, there were plenty of chairs."

That moment stayed with him for the rest of his life.

Dan later became a teacher at Glenfield Middle School in Montclair, New York, where he taught for 52 years. Every year around Martin Luther King Jr. Day, he shared that childhood story with his students. To help them understand its meaning, he kept one empty chair in his classroom. It stayed there for more than 30 years as a simple reminder that everyone deserves a place and no one should ever be left out.

The lesson became one of the most memorable parts of his classroom. Years later, Dan's story inspired the children's book *No More Chairs*, which he dedicated to his childhood friend, Archie Shaw.

Sometimes, the most powerful lessons are not written on a blackboard. Sometimes, they are taught by one empty chair that reminds us to always make room for others.
