Fritzinger's Bakery

Fritzinger's Bakery I made this page in remembrance of my family's bakery. I would love to hear your stories and comments too! On behalf of the Fritzinger family, I hope you enjoy! -John Fritzinger

My great-great grandfather James Fritzinger (1858-1931) purchased Paul Lentz's bakery and founded the Fritzinger Baking Company in 1902. The bakery was famous for its Rye Bread, locally and as far away as Washington DC and New York.

Happy New Year! I found this ad while looking through my Aunt’s 1964 yearbook. I think a picture of all the breads on display in the storefront would have been more appealing from an advertising standpoint, but it’s also cool to see a behind-the-scenes look at the baking process. Enjoy!

I don’t get to post too often, but I found this gem on eBay this week and snatched it up. This is a promotional sign that would hang in the shops of stores that sold Fritzinger’s bread.

I found some small Pie Plates from the bakery today. I had to ask my cousin Jamie for some of the specifics, and according to her these were used to make the funny cakes and shoo-fly pies. Prices were less than a dollar. Jamie remembers having to stamp out the prices on the little square price tags which went inside the bag with the pies. I wouldn't mind a shoo-fly pie right now!

Roger L. Bachman's Obituary on Morning Call

Sadly, I must announce that my Uncle Roger Bachman passed away yesterday. He was married to my Aunt Doris Bachman (née Fritzinger), father to my cousins Megan and Jamie, and a part of the Fritzinger's Bakery family. Some of you may remember him as he was the owner of Roger's Auto Parts in Slatington. He was a super-cool guy, and my thought and prayers go out to my cousins. RIP Uncle Roger.

This is a photo of my Aunt Minnie and her husband Asa Hoats. I don't know the year of the pic (I'm guessing in the 1930's), but it's clearly an early photo since you can see the sign for Fritzinger's Bakery and Ice Cream Shop - the shop was an addition to the front of the house on 11 Main Street. The building in the background across the street is recognizable and still has the same amount of windows.

Could it be? Yes! I made a loaf of classic Fritzinger's rye for thanksgiving! The results were not as awesome as I hoped for - dividing down a bulk recipe into two loaves threw off some of the ratios. It tasted right, but it should have risen more in the oven. I'll get it perfect for Christmas and repost a proper looking loaf!

My family owned volpes bakery in Allentown
I worked at Fritzinger's Bakery in the 1970s! I delivered to stores and restaurants for "Chick" and quit when John returned to the family business. Mr Queen retired and I ran the old delivery step side truck. We rejuvenated the business bringing back former accounts and adding many new. Chick agreed to hiring a second person for an Allentown route if I trained him. The new route was also a great success! I loved the work which showed me I was a sales person who went on to be a successful insurance agent.
