Just a fair warning if you message me and ask for my menu with no other comments I will likely think that you are not real or are spam. Myself and many other bakers have reported that a lot of folks send the message asking for a menu then either stop responding or never pick up and pay. This is the latest one. He stopped responding after this and then the profile disappeared.

Day 6 of Sourdough 101!

We are getting closer to being able to use our new starter!

For today we are going to discard half to 3/4 of the mixture again and add 2 tablespoons of flour and 1 tablespoon of water and mix well.

The small bubbles in the mixture are a good sign that yeast is forming and is happy!

Don't forget to cover loosely!

Fun fact! The sour smell attracts fruit flies so if you have some in your house and leave your sourdough uncovered they will get into it!

What is your favorite way to get sticky dough off your hands? I love these two options! Doap is a silicone bar covered in nubs that helps scrub the dough off, the dough doesn't stick to the bar and it is dishwasher safe!

The other option is cheaper and doesn't require the addition of soap because it is soap! This is commonly marketed as face soap but I find it works similarly to the Doap with its bumpy side helping to remove the sticky dough while washing at the same time. If you want to try them I'll post the links in the comments!

Ever wonder why you can't use the sourdough starter you just made when it has doubled in size and looks nice and bubbly?

The answer is until the yeast is established there is also bacteria growing and you will get a false rise from that bacteria creating it's own gas.

Eating that bacteria can make you very sick! Always wait till at least 10 days after you have gotten your starter going and make sure you have consistent rises in between feeds.

Did you know once you have an established Sourdough starter that you don't have to feed it every day? You can add it to a sealed container and put it in the fridge till you are ready to use it! The cold slows down the fermentation process and keeps you from having to feed daily.
