🍳👨🏾‍🍳 Day 2 And we are in the Kitchen at Knead & Grind Culinary Camp!

Today we recapped kitchen safety instructions, food sanitation procedures, and the importance of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Then it was time to get cooking!

Chef Ethan stepped up as our Head Chef for the day, leading his fellow chefs by making kitchen assignments, delegating duties, and ensuring everyone had a role to play. Our Kitchen Manager, Chef Isaiah, jumped in and helped bring the meal together by finishing the fried chicken.

Now for the real chef moment… I accidentally grabbed cornmeal from the store instead of flour! 😳 But what do great chefs do when things don’t go as planned? We pivoted!

Using creativity and teamwork, we improvised and used pancake flour as our chicken coating. And let me tell you… it was a Chef’s Kiss! 💋👌🏾

Today’s lesson wasn’t just about cooking. Our young chefs learned:

✅ Teamwork
✅ Leadership
✅ Kitchen Management
✅ Problem Solving
✅ Food Presentation
✅ Working Fast While Maintaining Quality
✅ Pivoting Without Panicking

Most importantly, they learned that mistakes happen, and successful chefs find solutions.

We wrapped up the day with an amazing brunch, lots of laughs, and memories that will last a lifetime.

I’m so proud of these young chefs and excited to see their growth over the next few weeks!

Today marked the first day of our Knead & Grind Culinary Summer Camp, and before we started cooking, we focused on learning what it takes to work safely and professionally in a kitchen.

At Knead & Grind, we believe:

“You must know what to do in the kitchen before you play in the kitchen.”

Our young chefs spent the day learning essential culinary life skills and workforce development concepts that every food service professional must know. Today’s instructional lessons included:

✅ Food Safety & Sanitation
✅ PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
✅ RTE Foods (Ready-to-Eat Foods)
✅ Temperature Controls & Food Danger Zones
✅ Cross-Contamination Prevention
✅ Raw Food Handling Procedures
✅ Proper Handwashing & Kitchen Hygiene
✅ Teamwork, Responsibility & Kitchen Expectations

Food safety isn’t just about cooking—it’s about protecting ourselves and others. These are real-world skills used every day in restaurants, bakeries, hospitals, hotels, and food businesses across the country.

We also want to extend a warm welcome to our Summer Camp Intern, Samiya, a Senior at Jackson State University majoring in Social Work. Samiya will be assisting with camp operations, youth engagement, and helping create a positive learning environment for our campers this summer. We are excited to have her as part of The Knead Cooperative family!

Today’s lesson reminded us that great chefs aren’t just creative—they are knowledgeable, disciplined, and committed to doing things the right way.

Thank you to our campers, families, volunteers, and supporters for an amazing first day! We can’t wait to get into the kitchen and put these skills into practice throughout the summer.

Summer Camp starts NEXT MONDAY and we are so excited to welcome our young chefs, creators, entrepreneurs, and future leaders to the Knead & Grind Culinary Summer Camp with The Knead Cooperative.

Our program is designed for youth ages 7–18 and includes:

This summer The Knead Cooperative is expanding our Knead & Grind Culinary Summer Camp by launching the NEW Knead & Grind Club + Innovation Hub for youth ages 7–18 and we are currently looking for community partners, entrepreneurs, creatives, instructors, and professionals to help us create meaningful experiences for our youth this summer!

We are seeking individuals interested in facilitating 90-minute enrichment sessions on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM between June 1 – July 2.

We are looking for:
• dance instructors
• yoga & wellness instructors
• beginner DJ instructors
• entrepreneurs & business owners
• branding/media creatives
• gardening educators
• fitness instructors
• arts & creative mentors
• self-care/confidence mentors
• workforce readiness professionals

This is your opportunity to:

This is more than just “after camp.”

This is a youth enrichment and leadership experience designed to help children and teens:

Thank you to WREG News Channel 3 Live at 9 for having me back to talk about growing vegetables and herbs inside your home.

I truly believe service should be in everything that you do. Whether I’m catering an event, mentoring children, teaching families how to grow food at home or standing in a TV studio talking about herbs in mason jars… it all comes from the same place for me. Purpose.

God did not place us here just for ourselves. We are supposed to pour into other people, serve others and leave something behind that helps somebody else grow.

We talked beginner herbs, easy vegetables, hydroponics, healthy meals and ways families can grow food right from their kitchen windowsill. Children are so much more connected to healthy eating when they help grow and prepare the food themselves and that’s one of the things we focus on heavily at The Knead Cooperative.

Honestly once I started talking about food, gardening and these babies, the nerves went right out the window.

Now if your child loves cooking, baking, gardening, creating or just being in the kitchen every five minutes, sign them up for the Knead & Grind Culinary Summer Camp this summer in Midtown Memphis.

We’ll be teaching cooking, baking, gardening, nutrition, entrepreneurship and life skills all summer long for ages 7 to 18.

And shoutout to everybody that watched me trying to hold it together under them studio lights because between the nerves and this perimenopause chile… somebody could’ve slid a fan over there to the plant lady.
