Brother Larry Barbary passed on to Eternal Glory
Lawrence Edward Barbary II, affectionately known as Larry, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Paola, Kansas. Born January 18, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Larry led a life marked by dedication, adventure, and an unwavering love for learning.
Larry’s academic journey culminated in his graduation from Penn State University in 1973, where he distinguished himself not only as a student but also as a photographer for the Daily Collegian.
In 1967, Larry answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Hancock as part of the Ghostriders squadron, embodying commitment and valor during his time in the military.
Following his naval service and university years, Larry embarked on a career in electronic sales that whisked him around the globe. His professional pursuits were complemented by a lifelong devotion to spirituality and ministry. Larry graduated from St. Paul's Seminary course of study in 2006, dedicating himself to serving various communities including La Harpe, Paradise/Waldo, Manhattan, Tribune, Kansas/Towner, Colorado, Albian/Loretto, Nebraska, and Avon Park, Florida. His ministry profoundly impacted the congregations he served.
A man of many talents and interests, Larry was an avid reader with an insatiable appetite for books. He cultivated numerous hobbies that enriched his life and the lives of those around him. In his younger years, Larry was a glider pilot and magician, he delighted in flight and the art of illusion throughout his life. Larry’s creative spirit extended to wood carving, tinsmithing, stamp collecting, and drawing. He enjoyed playing the bass guitar and played the bagpipes, especially within the Shrine. Additionally, he was a Ham radio operator and enjoyed model trains and playing video games, especially, World of Warcraft with his sons.
Those who knew Larry best, knew his sense of humor. He enjoyed getting to put smiles on another’s face.
His dedication to community safety and health was remarkable. Larry was a volunteer firefighter, an EMT captain, and a CPR instructor during his time in Pennsylvania and Illinois. His sense of responsibility and care was evident in his roles helping others in times of need.
Larry’s personal life was deeply enriched by the enduring partnership he shared with his wife, Barbara Barbary, whom he married on March 15, 1969. Their marriage of 57 years was a testament to mutual love and support. Together they raised two sons, Lawrence Edward Barbary III and James Alan (Carissa) Barbary, who survive him. Larry is also survived by his brothers Mark Barbary of California and Jeffrey Barbary of Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Edward Barbary, Sr., and Thelma Barbara Barbary, as well as an infant sister.
Larry was a member of the Shrine organizations in both Kansas and Missouri and was an active member of the Sharon Springs, Kansas Masonic Lodge. His life reflected a commitment to faith, fellowship, and community service.
Visitation will be held on April 7, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Paola United Methodist Church, located at 209 South Silver Street, Paola, KS 66071. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. and conclude at 12:00 noon at the same location.
Lawrence Edward Barbary II’s legacy is one of devotion-devotion to family, to faith, to country, and to the many communities touched by his ministry and service. His life’s work and passions stand as a tribute to a man who lived fully and gave generously.
