Well, last winter as I despaired one evening over the state of our kitchen (dishes overflowing the sink, crumbs and schoolwork and utensils all over the counters, overfilled trashcan, etc.), I remarked to my husband, "You know, our house could be really cute if weren't such a mess. And he was right--though I valiantly keep up the fight to curtail the mess and contain the kitsch.
