Celebrating 25 Years of Cooking Without Looking
The Sunday Edition Anniversary Event
This week on Sunday Edition, we are honored to celebrate a remarkable milestone; 25 years of Cooking Without Looking, a groundbreaking television show that has transformed how audiences understand blindness, independence, and everyday life.
Created and executive produced by Renée A. Rentmeester, Cooking Without Looking features visually impaired cooks preparing meals using adaptive techniques, tactile methods, and accessible kitchen tools. The show does something powerful and deceptively simple; it shows blind people doing normal things. Cooking. Teaching. Living.
Mr. Fred Schroeder, President of the World Blind Union, says this about the show;
"Your work fits well with our belief that blind people need encouragement to live normal lives and the sighted public needs the opportunity to learn that blindness does not render people helpless nor grant them with superhuman gifts. Your show shows blind people doing normal things, and that is a powerful message for the sighted public and for blind people themselves."
Cooking Without Looking teaches sighted audiences about the real lives of blind people while empowering the self esteem of people with vision challenges and blindness.
Renée brings a lifetime of storytelling and advocacy to her work. Prior to Cooking Without Looking, she worked at CBS as a press and public relations manager and spokesperson, associate news producer, and assignment editor. She has been nominated for two Emmy Awards; one for a series of Black History Month PSAs highlighting Miami leaders in the Civil Rights movement, and another for her writing on the youth gang violence special "Youth Violence: Walking The Line."
She is also the author of two published books of poetry available on Amazon; "Visions From a Dream Called Life: The Poetry of Meadowville" and "Visions II: The Poetry of Life." Renée is a proud mother to her daughter Lauren Morales and grandmother to Janaya Renée Carey, Elijah Carey, and Edward Mims.
Over the years, Renée has spoken to thousands of blind people through organizations including the National Federation of the Blind, the American Council of the Blind, and the American Federation of the Blind, always centering empowerment, dignity, and confidence.
We are thrilled to celebrate this anniversary with Renée and Cooking Without Looking host Allen Preston. While Sylvia Stinson Perez will be traveling and unable to join us live, you can listen to the latest episode of her podcast "Treading the Waters of Life" in the Sunday Edition feed.
Renée will also be bringing a special guest who will walk us through a fabulous recipe. There will be plenty of time for audience members to ask questions, congratulate Renée and the team, and shout out favorite episodes or recipes from the past 25 years.
If you would like to join us live to congratulate Renée and Cooking Without Looking, or if you have questions or comments, please email
