One of the most common jellyfish worldwide - and the one you're most likely to encounter on your beach vacation.
Also called "Moon Jelly" - here's your complete guide →
Scientific name: Aurelia aurita
Where found: All oceans worldwide (truly global distribution)
Peak season: Spring through fall in most regions
Identification:
Translucent, saucer-shaped bell
10-16 inches diameter (some up to 16 inches)
Four horseshoe-shaped go**ds visible through bell (looks like four-leaf clover)
Short tentacles around rim
Pale blue, pink, or clear coloring
Beautiful, graceful movement
Sting characteristics: Mild sting - most people barely feel it. Tentacles are short and venom is weak compared to other species.
