Ever tried it?? Napoleon is a traditional Russian cake with a pretty interesting background. Read below for a tasty history lesson:)

In the early 1800s, wars raged as French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his army seized many countries throughout Europe. In 1812, they invaded Russia. They were surprised to find Moscow burnt to a crisp and the cities void of people. The Russians knew they wouldn't be able to defeat the French army in a face to face conflict. So instead they let the French invade while they evacuated, burning down the bridges, crops, and rooftops as they left. If there was nothing for the French to take, they would leave.

A brutal winter blew in early in 1812. And Napoleon got stuck in it. With a lack of food supply, warm clothes, and shelter, the once 500,000 army was down to 100,000 in just a few months. They fled Russia and lost the battle.

In 1912, a comemorative cake was created for the hundred year anniversary of the defeat of Napoleon. Торт Наполеон (Tort Napoleon) has become a delicious Russian staple.

However, the term "cake" can be deceptive. This is no ordinary cake, in fact it's made of a puff pastry dough (last picture) rather than a cake batter! The layers are a thin, circular pastry filled with a vanilla egg custard. Berries top the cake, along with crumbled pastry.
