FEG Sweets & Treats is my way of paying tribute to three wonderful ladies: my great grandmother Fairy, my grandmother Elsie, and great aunt Gerene. All of them have passed away, but it is my hope that this business makes them all proud!
Fairy
Fairy Parris was my great grandmother on my dad’s side. My dad’s mother’s mother. She split the year with my great aunts Gerene and Ruth after her husband Ephraim and my grandmother Elsie passed away. Fairy was my best friend growing up. We played bingo, put together puzzles...I read the paper to her. She told me stories of hard work on the farm in the country: picking cotton, using the washboard til her fingers bled. Fairy made me laugh with little poems and things she’d tell me. For instance...one time we were putting together a 500 piece puzzle. We had the frame almost complete, and my 8 year old self said, “We’re almost done!” Without a second of hesitation she responded to that, “Sh*t, we ain’t even started yet!”. I remember her sitting at the table in her 90’s, rolling out the dumplin’s for Chicken and Dumplin’s with a tall glass. She knew what she was doing. Sadly, Fairy passed away on November 30, 1999 from Congestive Heart Failure. She was 94. There’s not a day that goes by, that I don’t think of her or something she said to me. I miss her. A lot.
Elsie Elsie Childers was my grandmother. My dad’s mother. I didn’t know her, but she knew and loved me. Elsie had a massive heart attack and passed away when I was 6 months old. The ER doctors told my family when she died, “It was her time to go...even if a team of doctors and nurses had been standing over her, they couldn’t have saved her.” Elsie loved to cook and bake. I’ve always heard stories about her various cakes and pies. She added her personal touches to recipes...changing flavorings and substituting things that she knew would make her desserts taste the best. Growing up, I loved to bake and make all kinds of desserts. Even from an early age, I always thought I should be like her and make my Grandma Elsie proud. Especially when cooking. My passion for baking is so strong, I’ve worked in a bakery for 12 years. Sadly, what few recipes Elsie had written(most were committed to memory)were lost. The recipes I make are what I’ve grown up with. Tried and true.
