Tyson Foods has announced it will lay off 3,200 employees at its plant in Lexington, Nebraska — a devastating blow for a town with a population of just 11,000 people. Local leaders say nearly half of the town’s schoolchildren have parents who worked at the plant, and many families say they don’t even feel like celebrating the holidays because they “feel like their life is over.” State officials, schools, and community organizations are scrambling to stabilize the town, hosting job fairs and pooling resources to help thousands now suddenly unemployed.
