Each morning, we place peanuts and cat food on our front wall for the neighborhood crows. They gather and squawk in the trees, impatient for breakfast, and, after they’re done, follow us as we walk our dogs around the neighborhood. We love the crows.

Last week, a crow we recognized appeared in the front yard, wounded with a crushed left foot and injured left wing. The neighborhood crows arrived shortly after it did, conferring noisily before they flew off. Our friend refused the food and water we offered. The next morning he lay dead on our entry sidewalk.

We feel blessed he came to us. We love the crows.
