Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. This program began in 1990 when a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students search for a way to raise funds for a food drive. They came up with a class project to make ceramic bowls in which to serve a simple meal of soup and bread to guests. The guests were invited to keep their bowl as a reminder of hunger in the wo

rld. By the following year, the originators had developed this concept, calling it “Empty Bowls.” Hundreds of Empty Bowl events are held throughout the world raising millions of dollars to combat hunger. For more information on the international site visit: http://www.emptybowls.net/

Here in San Diego, local potters are creating unique and beautifully crafted ceramic bowls in all shapes and sizes while some of our most favorite restaurants will donate soups and breads. Guests choose a bowl from hundreds on display for only $30.00 and then have it filled with delicious soup. After enjoying this simple meal of soup and bread, the guests take their bowls home as a reminder that their donation has helped to fight hunger in San Diego.

🎨 Calling All Local Potters and Woodturners! 🏺✨

Third Avenue Charitable Organization (TACO) is hosting our Empty Bowls event on May 10, 2025, at La Jolla United Methodist Church, and we need your help!

We’re looking for handcrafted bowls from generous potters, ceramic artists and woodturners to be part of this year’s event. Each bowl symbolizes the fight against hunger and helps us raise crucial funds to support our unsheltered neighbors in San Diego.
