Well things are really RAMPING up this year. The wild leek harvest of 2022 is headed our way today. And with the ramps, we will, of course, be making our famous ramp butter batch for the year. Both will be available at market this week and we could not be more excited to hear about all your recipes from silly finishing a steak with a dab of butter or going full on with Ramp-Potato Soup. Bonus points when you bring us samples of your dishes to try. 😉

Plus, don't miss out on our Ramp Sourdough Bread this week only!

We will celebrate the holidays this week with Irish Soda Bread for St Patty's Day and Hamentashen for Ukraine. For every purchase of Hamentashen, we will donate $1 to Polish Humanitarian Action to aid Ukrainian Refugees in need of assistance.

It's that time of year again! Greenhouses are buzzing with traffic. Hands are getting dirty. Seed packs are getting ripped open. Farmers are farming. It's our favorite time of year when we can almost taste the fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. For now, we will keep buggering along with a few more weeks of root veggies and fresh mushrooms. We also have several items on sale this month from sauerkraut to meat. The next two weeks are also your opportunity to grab as much butter and other dairy products before we have to (unfortunately) raise prices.

It's also that time when everyone is considering different CSA options. Who wants to commit to one farm? Spread the love this year by supporting over a dozen local farms. Unsure you'll be around for every week's pickups? Worried you're not going to want to eat everything in your box? Need extra? We've got you covered with our custom CSA - plus you get a free gift upon signup! We offer multiple pickup options and locations as well. This is also the time of year when, honestly, we can use the most support as market traffic slows to a crawl and our commitment to local produce often limits our selections. Click the blue link below to sign up for our Small World Custom CSA.

Long before the groundhog became the symbol of seasonal change, people around the world regarded the egg as a sure sign that Spring was on it's way. You can see this represented by the Easter egg and on the Seder Plate.

My sure sign is walking into the coop and finding the year's very first goose egg. I may not see any more for days, but soon, our flock will be in full production mode, which will only last about two months.

Look for our goose eggs available at market and preorder in the next few weeks. Until then, this one is mine.

What better way to spend this windy and snowy day than making broth? Oven roasted grass-fed beef, certified organic mushrooms, onions, carrots, and celeriac, and lots of herbs and spices. Simmered over night until it's darker and richer than Jeff Bezos. Stop on out to our bakery today to pick up some fresh veggies and maybe even a sample of the broth!

Here until 2pm. 936 Exchange St. Use Flint to come to the back of the building.

PS: Free Sauerkraut to anyone who comes and does this dishes for me!

Mother Nature is keeping us indoors tomorrow. The combination of market tents to keep our veggies from freezing and the 25 mph wind expected throughout the day might result in some true "Wizard of Oz" action. To avoid the chaos, we will spend another Saturday cooped up in our bakery. We will have the usual assortment available and we encourage you to browse the website for all the current offerings but you're free to stop in and chat.

As I sat today listening to the whir of the convection fans and smelling the syrup in our Maple Cashew Granola baking off, I wanted to take a moment to share with you a few thoughts on current events. Don't worry... this isn't about politics or the potential causes of the recent price hikes, but more about how we - you, our customers, and us as Small World - can react to the situation.
Small World has never been a company that competed with others on price. From the start, our focus has been on high quality ingredients and products sold to those who feel quality creates value. Doing this ensures our farmers and other local suppliers can thrive and flourish. Recently, our country has been hit with rising prices across the board. Some of effects were noticed immediately, while many others remain hidden. Increased seed, feed, and fertilizer prices will delay the effect on food prices for several months. We understand that with these higher prices, many people will make sacrifices where ever they feel the need.
At Small World, we can source cheaper products. We can reach out to larger distributors from further away. We can tell our farmers that they are no longer able to dictate their own prices. We can source from the veggie auctions like many other market vendors. We won't. We will continue to source flour and grain from local mills and veggies from local farmers using organic practices. We will continue to bake, ferment, and farm. We do this because of them - our farmers - who are making difficult choices for their own families. We do this because of you - our customers - who have always made the choice to spend a little more for quality, value and the knowledge that you are supporting up to 18 local families with a single purchase from Small World Food.
That all said, you may have noticed some price increases on our website and there are definitely a few more to come. Our hope is that you will come down this rocky road with us in order to continue supporting all of the amazing families, farms, mills, and artisans with which we work.

Place your order for pickup or delivery this weekend and we look forward to seeing you!

Mama cat is hanging up in the rafters of the barn today because... well, because she can, I guess.

We're going to aim for closer to normal hours tomorrow. We WILL have fresh spinach at market tomorrow as well as a few bags of lettuce as well. Plus, of course, our normal assortment of Bread, Ferments, Root veggies, Shiitakes, and more.

Come on out for our "warm" Saturday and say hi!

Well we hit the weather lottery again for tomorrow. Instead of multi million checks, we're looking at single digit temps. This means the same late start as the last few weeks and please preorder tender items like lettuce and celeriac for pickup as they won't hold up at market even with our heater.

We still have almost 100 items to choose from so put your order in now and stop on out this weekend

01/28/2022

It seems as if the weather has determined to keep us either shuttered inside or bundled up to play in the snow, because that seems like all we're going to get. But fear not, good people of Rochester, Spring is a mere 52 days away. We recently sat down with Henry and Sadie Stoltzfus to discuss seed purchases for this year's garden. And while I cannot guarantee any particular variety until it's actually harvested (something about not counting chickens before hatching), I can promise that we have some exciting varieties of tomatoes, cukes, and squash coming this year... If only we can get through this dreaded winter.

This week promises to be another chilly one with temps tomorrow night dropping into single digits again and no sign of warming up for at least a few days after that. As a result, we will again adjust our market hours and availability this week. We also must be concerned about our lettuce and spinach greens as the Stoltzfus family has worked hard to keep them going through winter. Both of these items will be available for pickup at our bakery only. We cannot bring these to market as they will freeze before we can even get set up. That said, we will have plenty of other goodies including some root veggies, lots of mushrooms, bone broth, jam, dairy, and ferments. You can even get warm bread if you come before it freezes ;-) and as always, thank you for your support!
