In the beginning of the pandemic, we were confused, we were nervous, we were unsure, but stayed patient, and we stayed focused.
A year later, just like all of our friends and families, we are still nervous, still a little unsure, but still patient, and still focused.
From our family and our entire team at Colangelo’s, we wanted to say thank you to our patrons for keeping us busy during one of the most tumultuous turning points of our life. We got through this together and we’re still going strong.

It's time you reward yourself with a treat from Colangelo's Bakery & Cafe! 🍪

The Strip District is an old market area with vendors from around the globe serving the tastiest treats and offering wares (as well as some very touristy Pittsburgh souvenirs. My fave was a child's tshirt which read "Don't Be A Jaggoff". 🤣😂🤣
Anyhow, we took a spin around. Our noses led us to Pittsburgh Popcorn Co where fresh kettle corn awaited us. There are some core flavors and then new special flavors which change weekly. Vegan options are clearly marked. This was the lightest crispiest mouthwateringingliest most perfectly balanced stuff ~ and a great accompaniment to the chocolate which followed! 😉
Next door is La Prima Espresso Co. with their perfect Almond Milk Iced Mocha that really got my day going and Colangelo's Bakery & Cafe where they were very helpful at pointing out vegan options. We chose the Artichoke Focaccia, which was HUGE and made with plenty of olive oil and perfectly zingy seasoning. We brought it home and popped it in the oven after our long drive back. It was the perfect post-trip meal. 🤗
Across the street sits Mon Aimee Chocolat . WHOA! These people know their stuff ! The place is packed wall to wall, toes to nose with fine chocolates from around the world. From baking chocolate to bar to cocoa to candy box you'll find a LOT to love. (Unless you don't love chocolate and I just never understood that). Many items are vegan and marked as such and if you've got any questions the staff is super knowledgeable. Next thing I knew the basket was getting pretty full .. I didn't mean to get so much, but there were SO many interesting varieties. They also packed it all with care, even including a little ice pack for safe travels.

David Neimanis seeks out Pittsburgh's best breakfast sandwich for Very Local Pittsburgh.
On his list is The Early Riser by our friends at Colangelo's Bakery & Cafe. David visited the Strip and has this to say:
The early morning vibe outside of La Prima Espresso Co. and Colangelo's Bakery & Cafe in the Strip District is basically what allured me to Pittsburgh. Not the suburban infiltrated weekend madness, but the calm weekday mornings as the city begins to rise. The old boys club playing cards, smoking ci**rs, and drinking cappuccinos while all the other suckers get ready for work. The suits coming in for a quick morning buzz, an Italian newscast on the television, and an overall calm, yet slightly chaotic vibe that temporarily pulls you away from the modern world, and plugs you into a beautifully simple ecosystem, high on espresso.
I often pair my La Prima cappuccino with a square of Colangelo’s pizza (I go redtop when they have it), but when I need real fuel I know where to look; the breakfast croissant.
A perfectly buttery, flaky, rectangular croissant, folded like a heavy down comforter, holding a greasy, fatty, protein rich rendezvous, all snuggled up for consumption. I go for the egg, ham, and cheese. They also do one that subs the ham out for bacon, and a veggie one that subs in tomato, which are also very good.
The whole sandwich gets cooked together, which makes for a unique egg. The egg is whole, it has a yolk, but based on cook time, the yolk sets to a dryness similar to that of its hard boiled counterpart. This might normally be slightly off-putting, but the butteriness of the croissant and meltiness of the provolone really step up to fill in where the egg falls short. An inspiring display of teamwork.
