Our latest (last) news

Well, it’s been a minute, and a lot has happened!

We found a space—the perfect Third Space—at 5349 Penn Ave in Garfield. You may remember it as the former BBQ joint Spork Pit (they have moved to the Doublewide Grill location in the South Side), but you won’t recognize it by the time we are done. We are deep in the process of securing permits and approval from the health department (no easy feat) and choosing paint color and flooring while we wait. It may seem like this should be the fun and exciting part, but boy do I just want to be back in the kitchen baking for you all! But good things take time, so we all must have patience.

In the meantime, we have been busy getting to know our new neighborhood while doing pop-ups with other fabulous local businesses (Two Frays (https://www.twofraysbrewery.com) and Trace (https://www.tracebloomfield.com) , I’m looking at you). We are so incredibly excited to be a part of this warm and wonderful community!

We have our last Spretzel event this Saturday from 2-7pm at Rocktoberfest (https://ironcityboulders.com/rocktoberfest-23/) , a collab between Two Frays and Iron City Boulders. And because we love Oktoberfest so much, we are doing a fun little cooking-with-beer demo at Two Frays (https://www.twofraysbrewery.com) next week, Wednesday 10/4 from 6-8pm. Also in October, we are doing a couple classes at Phipps (https://www.phipps.conservatory.org) : the first is Cooking with Beer (https://3989p.blackbaudhosting.com/3989p/Cooking-with-Beer) (shocker), the second is Cook your Book (https://3989p.blackbaudhosting.com/3989p/Recipes-from-the-Middle-East) , with recipes from Persiana: Recipes from the Middle East and Beyond. Come join us—it will be fun, and their teaching space is gorgeous!

And in November, you’ll be able to find us at the Bloomfield Famers Market (https://bloomfieldpgh.org/bloomfield-saturday-market/) ! We’ll be taking over the Crust Worthy (https://crustworthypgh.com) tent, and will be offering a mash-up of Crust Worthy’s famous sourdough loaves and Le Beau Gateau’s specialty pastries, plus a few Third Space originals. The best news is we’ll be selling Thanksgiving pies on 11/18 at the market, as well as on 11/22 (location TBD). If you go to our new website thirdspacebakery.com, you can sign up for our newsletter to get updates on our pie menu and pick-up details.

Which brings us to December: if miracles are real, then we’ll be opening our doors sometime that month. But if not--fear not--we will still be offering an amazing holiday menu for pick-up. Spring is finally here! (I think. I hope.)

It’s the time for beginnings, new growth, fresh starts. It feels like the perfect time to officially announce my new partnership with two amazing and accomplished women, Chloe Newman of Crustworthy (https://crustworthypgh.com) (if you haven’t already tried her sourdough breads, get yourself down to the Saturday Bloomfield market (https://bloomfieldpgh.org/bloomfield-saturday-market/) and do so—you won’t be disappointed) and Beth Taylor, who is a food writer, culinary tour leader, educator, and my fellow Luminari Camp Delicious (https://www.luminari.org/camp-delicious-online/) director. For the past 6 months, we have met weekly to develop Third Space Bakery (https://www.facebook.com/thirdspacebakery/) , a worker-owned cooperative bakery and teaching space.

Why “Third Space”? Third spaces are the necessary places outside of home and work that offer a healthy union of self and community. Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels welcome and nurtured with delicious breads and pastries, and a place where people can come together to learn and grow. Food brings people together in the best way! And operating as a cooperative, we will create a more equitable workspace where every worker has a vote and a voice.

Because starting up a new business requires A LOT of time and energy, I’ve realized I need to pause Le Beau Gâteau (don’t worry, if you’ve already put in an order, I got you). This little business is near and dear to my heart, and has served me in so many ways, not least of all connecting me with you. You are why I bake—it is immensely gratifying to give people joy through something I’ve created. Much of what you’ve ordered through Le Beau Gâteau will be available at Third Space, but there’ll be so, so much more. I ask for your patience and understanding as we build this dream. In the meantime, you can expect periodic updates on where we’ll be popping up around the city with baked goods and workshops, and on the development of Third Space (we are actively searching for the perfect location, send your leads our way). I’m so excited to have a place where I can see your beautiful faces that’s a bit nicer than a parking lot :)

You’ll notice the pastry box is a collaboration with Crustworthy—we wanted you to have a little taste of what’s to come. Thank you for all your support over the last couple of years, you gave me faith that I can do this.
