Every single night — whether it's warm out or cold — a hummingbird essentially powers down its entire body to survive until morning. Heart rate crashes from around 1,200 beats per minute to around 50. Body temperature drops so low that if you found one on a branch, you'd think it was gone. If a human's core temp dropped that far, we'd be in a medical emergency. For a hummingbird, it's just Tuesday. 😲 The fact that something this small has figured out how to cheat death on a nightly basis is one of the most jaw-dropping things in nature.
