Followed My Heart & It Led Me Here
44% of college students don’t know what they want to do after they graduate.
For Kate Smith, she knew she wanted to be in the Hospitality industry one way or another. After being raised in her family’s restaurant her whole life, she pursued a degree in Hospitality Management at Oklahoma State University, where she was able to further her Culinary studies in Florence, Italy and intern in Food & Beverage Management in Nanjing, China. Kate went on to graduate in her hospitality program with honors as a Top 10 Graduate and was selected as one of OSU’s Top 45 Graduates out of their 2017 graduating class.
But when it came to finding a career, she had one of the most difficult decisions to make. She had offers that she had worked hard for, but had also just gotten engaged to the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Jonathan, whose career prospects were in Kansas City. Kate followed her heart and move to KC with her soon to be husband without securing her own career.
Then came a year of starting over in a big city with no connections. Kate was later diagnosed with Relocation Depression after being unemployed for over a year with no motivation to begin her career or to even leave her room. It finally got to the point where she didn’t recognize the woman she was a year ago and decided to do something on her own and start Kate Smith Soirée. Starting at the Lenexa Public Market as a day cart to sell her French Macarons, the community came and overwhelmingly supported the small business. And quickly followed by the KC Wedding Community inviting Kate Smith Soirée into their world with arms wide open. Only a few months later, Kate opened her permanent store front inside of the Lenexa Public Market in June 2019 and has become an award-winning bakery and entrepreneur in the State of Kansas and in the wedding industry.
