Everybody talks about pulling w**ds… but not enough people talk about how many of them once fed entire families.

Some of the plants growing wild in fields, fence rows, and roadsides were historically gathered, dried, and ground into flour during hard times, homestead living, and even everyday cooking. A lot of β€œw**ds” are really just forgotten survival plants.

Lamb’s Quarters
Often called wild spinach, but the tiny seeds can also be harvested and ground similar to quinoa! High in nutrients and surprisingly useful.

Amaranth
One of the BIGGEST forgotten survival foods. Wild amaranth grows everywhere in Tennessee summers. The seeds can be toasted, cooked like grain, or ground into flour. Ancient civilizations literally survived on this plant.

Plantain
Not the banana kind πŸ˜† the little broadleaf yard w**d. The seeds can be dried and ground, though it’s more commonly used medicinally.

Dock (Curly Dock)
Those tall rusty seed stalks? Yep… the seeds can be collected, winnowed, and mixed into flour. People used this during food shortages for generations.

Cattails
Baby… this one is basically a grocery store disguised as a swamp plant
The roots can be dried into flour, pollen can be added to baking, and different parts are edible through the seasons.

Acorns
Not technically a w**d, but absolutely one of the most forgotten flour sources. Properly leached acorns can become a rich nutty flour that was used heavily by Indigenous communities.

Dandelions
The roots can be dried and ground for coffee alternatives, while parts of the plant were often added into breads and survival meals.

Wild Grasses
Some wild grasses produce harvestable seeds that can be ground into primitive flour. Tiny harvest… huge patience but our ancestors absolutely did this.

Modern life taught us:
β€œKill the w**ds.”

Older generations knew:
β€œSome w**ds feed you.”
β€œSome heal you.”
β€œSome rebuild the soil.”
β€œSome show up exactly where the land needs help.”

Nature really is out here trying her best to take care of us if we slow down long enough to learn her language

Not saying go harvest random roadside plants and make sourdough immediately πŸ˜†
Proper plant ID matters BIG TIME because some plants have toxic lookalikes.
