We open the show with news stories. You'll hear about the glacier collapse and flooding in the Nepal and China border, Governor Hochul allowing new nuclear, and a state government addressing the cause of a cancer cluster.

What do hard rock, classic comic books, science fiction, birding, and the environment have in common? Our co-host and friend Ken Gale! 35 years ago he joined WBAI as a producer and later as an engineer also. In 2002 Ken started Eco-Logic on WBAI, which has had various time slots over the years. Ten years later he gathered together friends who had been guests to form the Eco-Logic Collective and Donna Stein joined the show as a regular co-host. A few years later they welcomed Sally Gellert as the third regular co-host, with other members of the collective and advisors contributing occasionally.

Colleagues, co-hosts, and friends for several eras of Ken's radio life share their memories and opinion's and all are glad he is with us on the airways! You'll hear from the first person who brought him to WBAI, Edina Rene Menje, when he co-hosted “Monsters of the ID” which morphed into the popular long-running comic book radio show “'Nuff Said!” 1993-2007 and still does an occasional show when he subs on Jim Freund's “Hour of the Wolf', and on Saturday pop-up shows, to friend and archivist of “Nuff Said! David Donovan, to Eco-Logic Collective member and videographer extraordinaire Charlie Olson to Max Schmid of “Golden Age of Radio” to his current co-hosts, Sally Gellert and Donna Stein.

Listen in to hear stories from people who know him and how he grew to the broadcaster he is now. Basically the consensus is he was always interesting to talk to and listen to and a really good guy!

FOOD RESCUE:
DISTRIBUTION, GLEANING, & MORE

Literally tons of food are wasted in the U.S. yet there is still a lot of hunger. Only about 2% of that food is rescued, which is one ton in every 50 tons, and it used to be even less. Thousands of local and regional organizations are working to change that. Most people don't know just how much food is wasted and how food insecurity could be eliminated.

There are many types of organizations rescuing food in different ways. Some food recovery organizations work with farmers to rescue huge harvests that otherwise would have been destroyed; some organizations supply local churches and other food pantries directly; some organizations go to farms and glean produce. Gleaning is rescuing unharvested unsold crops right off the farm, before they rot in the field.

There is an advocacy aspect to reducing hunger and food insecurity. We'll go into details on that and you'll learn what your own role can be.

Our guests this week are
Aidan Reilly, who co-founded Farmlink seven years ago when, as a pantry volunteer and college student, he learned that more produce was needed. He contacted farmers and found that they sometimes had more than they could sell. He created a national distribution network to food banks, etc.

Laurie Beyranevand, Director for Vermont University's Center for Agriculture and Food Systems and the lead on their National Gleaning Project, is a Professor of Law at Vermont Law and Graduate School. Laurie has published articles on the connections between human health and the food system.

THE INSECT APOCALYPSE
IF THEY GO, WE GO

Butterflies, ladybugs, praying mantises, crickets, fireflies, dragonflies.

We've done shows on specific insects, including fireflies, bees, and butterflies, but only short articles on all insects. On this show we will expand upon the May 27th episode's news item on the insect apocalypse and how dangerous it is to all human life.

Many folks think of only very few of the hundreds of thousands of species of insects and often have negative responses to them. Fortunately for life on Earth, there are many positive aspects to insects. That's part of what we'll discuss.

GARBAGE WATER IN OUR RIVERS
HOW MUCH TOXIC WATER IS TOO MUCH

When the Yonkers Joint Wastewater Treatment plant recently had a sewage spill dumping up to 45 million gallons of raw or partially treated sewage into the Hudson River due to an infrastructure failure, we knew it was time for a show about wastewater.

Our guests on this episode discuss the range of pollution to our waterways from malfunctioning wastewater treatment plants to leachate from garbage dumps and landfills into our rivers and groundwater. Leachate is the liquid that circulates in the waste found in landfills. It takes in substances from the material, often making it harmful or poisonous.

Rebecca Martin is a New York River Watch cofounder and executive director, a seasoned organizer and campaign strategist with over 20 years of experience. She is a founder of KingstonCitizens.org, which supports civic engagement and served as Executive Director of the Kingston Land Trust. Rebecca was formerly with Hudson Riverkeeper and currently serves as source water protection coordinator for the Hudson 7, an intermunicipal council protecting the Hudson River as a drinking water source for more than 107,000 people.

Nicole Miller has been a local and regional leader on water and energy issues for over a decade and holds several related roles, including co-chair of NewarkDIG (Doing Infrastructure Green), dedicated to resilient and sustainable municipal stormwater management, and co-chair of the Jersey Water Works Steering Committee, a statewide coalition focused on improving NJ’s aging water infrastructure. She is a parent, business owner. and advocate living in Newark, NJ. Nicole is principal of MnM Consulting, specializing in strategic communications focused on clean energy, clean water, and sustainability.

The Passaic Valley Sewage Commission (PVSC) is looking for simple fossil-fuel-based solutions, back-up power from a gas-fired power plant, but the community says no. The Ironbound neighborhood in Newark has long been a “sacrifice zone” and residents want clean air and water. A real discussion needs to happen to figure out how to create the needed 34 MW of backup power. Renewable methods cannot easily generate that many MW in a small area.

Water systems throughout the region often are combined sewer overflows CSOs, which send untreated waste directly into our rivers when the system is overwhelmed during and after a big storm. Often municipalities do not have resources to improve those systems, and spending money on wastewater treatment is not popular. One solution is for municipalities to have stormwater utilities funded by volume-based usage fees rather than one-size-fits-all fees based on property size.

On this show learn how regulatory gaps allow toxic landfill “garbage water,” known as leachate, to enter New York’s waterways. This toxic liquid can contain PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides and thousands of other chemicals. Each year, between 2019 and 2023, more than half a billion gallons of landfill leachate were sent to municipal sewage treatment plants that are not designed to remove these contaminants. Nearly one-third was discharged into rivers and lakes designated as drinking water sources, including the Hudson River, Mohawk River, Lake Ontario, and the Niagara River.

There is currently a bill in Albany that would close the “leachate loophole” that leaves New York rivers and groundwater vulnerable to runoff from landfills, garbage dumps, and landscaping/agricultural pesticide and fertilizer chemicals. Learn what you can do to get this bill passed.

NJ & NY NESE PIPELINE UPDATES
WATER QUALITY AT RISK

NESE is back! Or it never left? The NESE pipeline was rejected in 2017. The problem with the greedy corporations that have no consideration for the environment is that they never give up. Tune in to find out why our guests have so much optimism about stopping NESE again.

This show is not only about a specific pipeline in New York and New Jersey, but also about pipeline activism in general. There are several ways to combat them and we willl discuss them on this episode. There is good news and reasons to be optimistic as people throughout the proposed pipeline area are rising up. 25 towns have already gone on record as opposing the NESE pipeline. The Pilgrim Pipeline fight is a good template for any environmental victory. That pipeline hasn't come back. It can't. All the towns along its path have passed ordinances to block it.

An educated community is necessary. Too often, and in this case, the communities who are going to be affected are not informed. When people know what is going on in their neighborhood they work to protect it and oppose the pipelines. Activists need to stay vigilant.

THE NESE pipeline that was to go through New Jersey and into New York Harbor and hook up with the already existing large high pressure pipeline under Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn was stopped in court by activists in 2017. The pipeline company now is apparently assuming a more favorable political climate.

There is one way that the polluters are further along than they were in 2017. Water permits that were denied then have been approved this year. There are two lawsuits specifically opposing the permit certificate. In addition there are other lawsuits based on other aspects of this pipeline.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the pipeline, as is unfortunately usual for them, and there are also lawsuits against FERC calling the pipeline a "public necessity" which it certainly is not.

JK Canepa of the Sane Energy Project is also member of the Eco-Logic Collective and has been active in fighting the New York side of this pipeline for years. She is one of the busiest and most effective activists we work with.

We have had teachers and parents tell us that they and their chiidren use our show in school--both high school and college. They know we do our research. Science is not based on belief, but is proven and repeatable. We give facts and sources, not just opinions! When we do give opinions, they are formed by consulting multiple sources and experts. There are many ways to present environmental issues—we try to use all of them.

Eco-Logic programs include local, regional, national, and global perspectives—not on every show or issue, but when it is appropriate. Our guests have credentials you can trust.

We love to bring this show to you because informing folks about the important environmental issues that affect people and planet helps positive change happen. The more information you have and the more stories you can tell when talking to your friends, neighbors, and family, the better.

The answer to despair is to do something! Informed action can make a difference even though you might not see the ripple effects right away. Educate and activate!

Eco-Logic has been on the forefront of so many issues: stopping fracking, shutting down Indian Point nuclear reactors, stopping radioactive waste being dumped into the Hudson River, opposing extractive-energy finance. We cover such issues as clean air, water, and land, renewable energy, energy innovations, climate chaos, right to repair, fast fashion, green jobs, AI data centers, celebrating nature and our part in it, plastic, transportation and infrastructure, geoengineering, food, wilderness, and the oceans.

We show the connections between the environment and Indigenous rights, environmental justice, the military, labor, health, and feminism. As one listener said, we have the most EIPN: environmental information per minute!

Fund-raising is a necessary part of listener-supported radio. July and August tend to be slow donation months. You may have gotten e-mails from different organizations saying the same thing. People who can donate are usually the same people who can afford to go on a summer vacation--but transmitter rent doesn’t take a holiday, nor do most of your favorite WBAI shows. Please help to make up for the people who are away and for those whose resources are stretched too thin so that WBAI can make its fund-drive goal and pay our tower rent.
