2016 was the beginning of my now. I was working at as VP of Programs and Education. I just had Zadie and really yearning to do more work in my own neighborhood. All of the exhibitions and programs I organized were seeds for my current work —from our new mom’s group at the then Brooklyn Children’s Museum’s satellite space in DUMBO to the exhibition “Our City” that was designed for the little ones and their parents to have discussions about what it means to live in our city, I was in hindsights rehearsing for this chapter of life.

During that year, my desire to be an entrepreneur was in full effect. I always said I wanted to be a “business woman” in elementary school. I really wanted to build something to pour into everyday as I had been pouring into all of the amazing non-profits I was working for. I was one of the subjects of my friend ’s work on being a working mother. I was constantly feeling that tension of leaving my babies but also doing work I loved.

While on maternity leave with Zadie in DC, I had an idea…we should open an ice cream shop! The restaurant that Nick was managing had just closed and I thought this would be a great way for him to do since he said he’d always wanted to open a restaurant one day. 😂 An ice cream shop was not exactly what he had in mind but he went with it. And so the research began. By October 2016, we were in full force of looking for a space and starting the brand.

2016 was a transitional year full of desire for closer connection at home and rooting in home.

Thank you, 2016.

I’m sharing the story about my summer in Sweden while in grad school for those who did not see it in my Stories this summer.

My biggest takeaways from this walk down memory lane are:

1) I am down for new experiences (however scared they make me feel).
2) In order for me to accomplish any goal, I need to be committed to my growth and moments of discomfort.
3) I The permission I have given myself to explore myself and the world has only contributed to the version of me that I am now.

If you are looking for an opportunity to redefine the next chapter of your life in 2023, I invite you to enroll in the course. There’s info at the link in my bio. I’ve revamped the page to offer more detail about the structure of our time together.

Hope to see you there in 2023!

We returned to our pre-COVID tradition of spending Thanksgiving at the shop. Our guests included my sister, our nephew, college friends and their families, and one of our biz vendors. Our food was partially homemade and partially re-seasoned store bought. 😆 Zadie made the name tags for our assigned seating and Ila learned which size scoopers go with which scoop. Nico ate bread and ice cream. There’s so much to be grateful for.

Hope you all had a great day and day after. I just woke up from my second nap of the say courtesy of my sister. Amen. 🙏🏾🍁🦃

I ran the marathon in 2019. Swipe to see photos from the day of and my pace breakdown.

I did this for me and my two goals were to finish the race without stopping. I wasn’t out there to beat anyone else but myself. I wanted to challenge myself to do something really hard.

There is something so beautiful about running.

It’s just you against you.

During yesterday’s race I had a few conversations with folks who have flirted with the idea of doing the same.

With marathons (and anything really) it’s easy to dismiss the ember that burns inside of you to push yourself to a limit most wouldn’t dare approach.

To the people who think about running a marathon (or doing something they’ve never seen anyone else in their life do), I say:
1. Do it…do it even if everyone around you thinks it’s crazy.
2. Meet yourself where you are.
3. Set goals that make sense for you.
4. Find and surround yourself with people who do get what you’re doing even if they are further along in their training than you.
5. Show up for yourself consistently through practice and discipline.
6. Give yourself grace if/when you fall short on your (speed or training) goals. Just don’t quit.
7. Enjoy the process of feeling defeated and then getting back up again to push yourself forward.
8. Celebrate all of your wins big and small.
9. Set in your mind that it will happen and you will finish because you absolutely can and will.

These words don’t apply to aspiring marathon runners.

They apply to anyone trying to do a hard thing that feels scary.

You can do anything you want. Don’t be discouraged by how crazy anyone else thinks your desire is.

Save this post for the next time you’re thinking of doing the unknown.
