A lot of you are new here, so hi!

I’m Kristina.

I’ve spent almost 18 years thinking about how people sound.

Before this, there was acting, singing, filmmaking, teaching English, coaching tennis… a few countries and a few languages.

Now I teach American speech, raise a bilingual three-year-old, and somehow spend an unreasonable amount of time thinking about vowels.

Thanks for finding my weird little corner of the internet. 🤗

I teach American pronunciation for a living, which apparently means I’m supposed to have very serious opinions about vowels.

I do.

I also think sounding interesting is more important than sounding perfect, that every language brings out a slightly different version of you, and that a well-delivered “what the f**k” is sometimes worth an entire vocabulary lesson.

A few thoughts from my recent trip to Italy, Malta, Georgia and actually everywhere else I’ve ever collected a personality.

An American asks where you’re from and your brain immediately opens a disciplinary hearing about your vowels.

Meanwhile, the guy just wants to tell you about the three weeks he spent in Europe after college.

Sometimes the question is friendly. Sometimes it’s flirting. Sometimes it’s intrusive. You can respond to the conversation you’re actually having instead of the one your insecurity has already written.

What’s the most unhinged follow-up you’ve ever heard after telling someone where you’re from?

Called him Leonard.

Asked for a rain check on a 78-degree day.

And somehow, Boris is the unreasonable one.

Get in an Alo bag.
Say increasingly random phrases.
Repeat until language becomes a game.

I’ll say something new, weird or unnecessarily sophisticated and she’ll try to catch it, remember it and say the whole thing back.

It started as pure entertainment. It still is.

But I love watching what happens when language is treated as something you can play with, not something you have to get right.

Maybe we’d all speak better if we played with language before we tried to perfect it.
