Black Comic Previews is a complete grassroots effort and labor of love for an industry of professionals who are at all times overwhelmed and under served. With nearly 20 years in all corners of the industry myself, I have seen its best sides and unfortunately I have also seen some of its worst.

That is why I’d like to bring your attention to some organizations that are putting in the work to provide true compassionate support, advocacy and education within an environment that is far too often focused on squeezing profit at the expense of the professionals and fans who drive the the industry we all love so much.

Black Comic Previews pledges to donate 10% of any income we make through our Patreon support, Ko-Fi tips and ad sponsors each fiscal quarter to one of these four comic industry nonprofits — Nerds For Literacy, Women in Comics Collective International, The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and The Hero Initiative.

We are a very young organization and our current income is modest to say the least, but we are growing and as our income grows so shall the pledges we will be contributing to their efforts. The current fiscal quarter ends September 30th and whatever we have made by that time will drive our very first donation to Tony Weaver Jr’s Nerds For Literacy.

This month, Black Classic Press is highlighting books centered on Ethiopia, ancient history, the origins of civilization, and the intellectual traditions that connect African history to global history.

Celebrating 100 years of Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Cush*te Empire
Drusilla Dunjee Houston
First published in 1926, Drusilla Dunjee Houston (a self-taught historian), describes the origin of civilization and establishes links among the ancient Black populations in Arabia, Persia, Babylonia, and India. In each case she concludes that the ancient Blacks who inhabited these areas were all culturally related.

Pillars in Ethiopian History: William Leo Hansberry, African History Notebook Volume 1
Joseph E. Harris (Ed.)
The father of African Studies, William Leo Hansberry, examines the myth and legend surrounding some of the African continent's most dynamic countries. Pillars in Ethiopian History (Volume I) consists of four of Hansberry's lectures on the theme of Ethiopian history—the Queen of Sheba legend, the origin and development of Ethiopian Christianity, medieval international relations, and the Prester John legend. These essays are taken from Hansberry's private papers amassed while he taught at Howard University from 1922 to 1959.

Originally published in 1911, Ethiopia Unbound is both a literary and historical narrative that connects Ethiopia to Black political imagination and African identity.

Ethiopia and the Origin of Civilization
John G. Jackson
In Ethiopia and the Origin of Civilizaiton, scholar John G. Jackson challenges Eurocentric history. He argues that ancient African societies, particularly those from Ethiopian and Egypt, were foundational in creating human culture, science, and urban life.
