I came to a new realization today, 1/27/23. I do not HAVE to pass the car in front of me! I can slow down, relax and get to my destination safely and on time. Americans are all in a big hurry. At the grocery, at the restaurant, at the intersection, we rush to get anywhere quicker. We must slow down. Most farmers that I know, including my son, don’t want much land. They just want “all land that joins their land”. It is the same with car and truck drivers on the road. I just must get around “the one ahead of me”. Are you one of those drivers? I have been one of them. I have hit the passing gear many times to get around the car ahead of me. I realized today, at 81 years of age, that I don’t necessarily have to pass that car or truck. When I thought that through, I took a deep breath and relaxed. My new High Country has the power to pass everything on the road. I resolve to slow down and “smell the roses”. Recently, I was headed to Nashville after a hunting trip to KY. In a hurry as usual, I was slowed down by a car in the left lane ahead of me. I blinked my lights several times to no avail. Blue flashing lights appeared in my rearview mirror. When the officer walked up to my vehicle, he said he had clocked me at 89 mph. After a nice discussion, I mostly listened meekly, he asked me to slow down and drive carefully. I think he was lenient because I am a veteran. Driving my new Tahoe is a dream. I resolve to slow down. Watch for me on your local highway. My truck is Pearl White. Let’s all slow down and get home safely. Have a great weekend!

Summary of my day 1/9/23.

01/09/2023

I have had a good day today, 1/8/23. I took my 2003 Tahoe with 292,000 miles to get a new catalytic converter installed. Converters are expensive these days. While expecting a two hour wait, I walked a couple of blocks to a Panera Bread for some nourishment. I had my copy of Randy Alcorn’s “Heaven” with me. I got my food and sat down at a table, with the book in view to anyone walking by. A lady saw it and said that it was a great book. We talked a few minutes and I found out she had lost her six month old son about five years ago. She was from Venezuela and had read the book in Spanish before coming to this country. After eating, I sat at a table and read the book. My lifelong friend Roy Smallwood called me and we talk about an hour. Later, another friend called and we caught up with news. Her husband has esophageal cancer. She is caring for him while helping her daughter, who lives in her basement, with her two autistic children. Her husband abandoned them several years ago. I told her that God loves her, and has chastened her with all these difficult circumstances. I dated her in high school and we have remained friends for over 64 years. This day will go down as a great one in my life.

I met Osmila at Panera Bread this morning, 1/9/23. She noticed that I had Randy Alcorn’s book “Heaven” on my table. She said that she loved the book. I told her that I lost my wife 4 years ago, and had thought more about heaven since then. She said she had lost a son who was six months old about five years ago. She attends church in Smyrna. She was originally from Venezuela. I realized that having the book with me created the contact with her. It was an opportunity to converse about spiritual things. When she walked away, she said “If I don’t see you again, I will see you in heaven”.
