On Friday, March 27 sent a letter to urging them to adopt a Maine-First Sourcing Policy, on the heels of a public statement by Hannaford about a carrot shortage in stores while Maine-grown carrots are abundantly available. ⠀

They replied, and MOFGA is meeting with them on April 16th to discuss. 🥳

A Maine-First Sourcing Policy means committing to sourcing Maine-grown carrots (and other foods) before turning to out-of-state suppliers to fill any gaps. It also means offering sustainable contracts to farmers that reflect the true cost of local production.⠀

Out here in Maine, food does not just come from a store shelf. It starts in the rocky soil and cool earth. The Goodale family (Karen, Bill, and Chace) from Windham, needs their community’s support. Early this morning, their home caught fire and is a total loss. Thankfully, everyone made it out. Their 14-year-old dog, Moosy (pictured), is currently at the vet being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. The vet is hopeful for a full recovery.
Right now, we are focusing on immediate needs such as clothing, hygiene items, and gift cards to Walmart, Hannaford, or local fast-food restaurants so the family can grab meals while they navigate the next few days.
They are currently in a hotel so they cannot accept the big items right now. They do plan to rebuild, but that obviously takes lots of time.

Chace, age 10, lost everything. He loves Legos, Minecraft, and Nerf guns. We already have several new Lego sets we will be gifting him this week.
