Two months from today is the publication date of The Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook, and we’re getting excited. Visit redtruckbakery.com and click on “Cookbooks” for the first of our book events throughout the South, and in Napa Valley and the Monterey Peninsula where my story starts. A crosswalk accident and concussion came close to derailing the book’s schedule during the final months of photography and edits, and we thank photographer Angie Mosier, recipe tester Bonnie Benwick, and former bakery staffer Venus Barratt for jumping in to help during the photo shoot at the farmhouse where the bakery was launched. Thanks also to Clarkson Potter editor Lydia O’Brien, who came down from New York to keep it on track. You all made the book even stronger.

Our number one favorite: Alma Hackney’s Rum Cake. As we head into June this week, we’re saluting our late choir director Alma Hackney’s 113th birthday with her beloved rum cake, light and golden and just right for summer. We wonder if its popularity is due to Southern Living giving our cake their annual Food Award, or because Washingtonian magazine says it’s the best afternoon pick-me-up in D.C. Or perhaps because chef Vivian Howard featured it onstage in a cooking demo at the ThriveNC festival, where we gave out nearly 4,000 samples. I’d say it’s because the buttery, crackly rum glaze makes it so delicious. We have plenty on hand in our Marshall store, and we ship it anywhere in the U.S. at RedTruckBakery.com.

A pat on the back and a handshake to the customer who walked into our store this week and asked if we were still donating to chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen with each Ukrainian cookie sold. When we said yes, he bought them all and left without them, asking that we hand them out to our customers. We did, and we’re moved by his generosity. We’ll be making these every day. We’re also selling Ukrainian flag pins on behalf of Rappahannock glass artisan Heidi Morf, who in turn is donating 100% of her proceeds to WCK.

Short term apt rental needed: We need help from our Northern Virginia friends in Arlington and McLean: We have a friend whose son (now a senior in Colorado) has been offered a three-month internship in McLean, Virginia, and is struggling to find a place to stay (anywhere in the area) between May 15 and August 15. Without a car, he'll be using public transportation. He and his dad will be in town next weekend and we hope to provide them with a few places (garage apartment, studio, room for rent) to look at. Three months from today is the publication date of our new Red Truck Bakery Farmhouse Cookbook. It wouldn’t have been possible without the superb guidance of my Clarkson Potter editor Lydia O’Brien (here presenting a fried green tomato & pimento cheese sandwich for photographer Angie Mosier). As the book was wrapping up and I was dealing with a concussion, Lydia guided me through the final stages of edit corrections and helped with the farmhouse photo shoot, and she kept the book (and me) on track.
