The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians has released more than 1.1 million native fish into the Upper Great Lakes, continuing its long-term efforts to protect culturally significant species and strengthen local ecosystems.

Led by the Tribe’s Natural Resources Division Fisheries Program, the 2026 stocking included more than 901,000 walleye (Ogaa) and nearly 279,000 lake whitefish (Adikameg).

Over the past 25 years, the Tribe’s Barbeau Hatchery has released more than 22 million walleye, helping support fish populations across northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

The program also continues to restore lake whitefish, a species that has declined in recent years due in part to invasive quagga and zebra mussels. Tribal biologists have developed innovative pond-based rearing techniques to improve the survival of young whitefish before they are released into the Great Lakes.

Working alongside conservation partners, the Tribe continues to invest in the long-term recovery of native fish populations while helping protect the Great Lakes for future generations.

There are moments I wish I could freeze forever. ♥️ Berry picking on the side of the mountain with my oldest is one of them.
The land has a way of slowing us down and reminding us what really matters. Our ancestors understood that every trail, every berry, and every season carries a story.
Watching him grow into his own little person is the greatest blessing and the hardest part of being a mom. Every year he becomes a little more independent, a little more himself, and while I’m so proud of the amazing boy he’s becoming, a part of me quietly wishes time would slow down. I’ll hold onto days like this forever the laughter, the berry-stained fingers, the mountain air, and the memories we gathered together.
No matter how much you grow, you’ll always be the little boy who made me a mom. ❤️🌿
