The vision of this bakery started over 20 years ago at a pink house, on the corner of Ave. H and North 2nd street, right across from George’s Restaurant. As a young girl I remember staying home and spending a lot of quality time with my Great-Grandmother, Henrietta Burleson (AKA “Nanaw”). The 2 memories that stick with me the most is that every morning her friends, Mrs. Julia “Juju” Denny, and Mrs
. Janie “Madear” Milton would come over to have a cup of coffee and a slice of poundcake! These four ladies were called “The Golden Girls.”
This morning get-together was not just a casual visit for The Golden Girls! There was an every day excitement that burst through their smiles as they conversed, laughed, sung, danced, prayed, and shared valuable time together. I am not sure how, but there always seemed to be a fresh baked poundcake on the table ready and in the midst of these precious memories. Every morning the “Golden Girls” would sit on the porch and chat while I sat in my treehouse baking mud pies. Even in the middle of a conversation, my Nanaw still made time to acknowledge my admirable work and even “taste” it. This was a love stamp on my heart, because for those of you who know, back in the day, you dare not interrupt “grown folks conversation.” Lol! Henny handled me with such care. And that’s how she handled her poundcakes. Henny loved to bake and I loved sweets! I loved sweets so much that she “silver capped” my nickname as “Suga.” We spent a lot of time baking together. She taught me many recipes including her secret ingredients- prayer and love. Henny & Suga will continue the legacy of Henrietta Burleson, serving love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness, through a slice (or a few😉) of poundcake!
