Kimbel Construction - Tip of Day: Knowing we have a major winter storm approaching for many of us across the U.S., I wanted to make everyone aware of something that could help keep you warm during a power outage.

Many homeowners aren’t aware that 90% of gas log fireplaces that use a switch to turn them on, have a battery backup feature that allows you to still turn on the fireplace even when the power is out. If your fireplace has this feature, this battery pack is typically located behind the flip up door on the front/bottom of the fireplace. On my fireplace, it uses two “D” size batteries (see photo). If you lose power during a winter storm, using this battery backup feature could make a huge difference in helping to keep your home warm until the electric comes back on.

Before this winter storm impacts you, check your gas log fireplace and see if it has this backup feature and make sure you have the correct batteries if you need to turn it on. Note: If your fireplace has a blower, the blower won’t work during a power outage because it’s wired to high voltage, but the fireplace will still work with the battery backup power and provide radiant warmth.

Kimbel Construction - Photo of the Day: Surprised to see one of our past projects featured in Architectural Digest on 12-22-22 when we were flipping through the pages and came across a photo that looked very familiar. The New York designer RP MIller, submitted photos for an article and the writer decided to use this photo for an article they were writing headlined "10 Design Trends that Will Shift the Vibes in 2023". Even though we weren't credited with the construction in the article, it was nice to see our project in a national publication. The only footnote I need to mention (and this is the funny part) is that this kitchen was completed in 2016, so that means our clients and designer were 6+ years ahead of the curve when it came to design trends for an article written about trends in 2023. Still nice recognition for all involved and another one of a kind Kimbel Construction project!

Kimbel Construction - Video of the day: Today’s video is a good example of what I call “gettin’ it done” at lot 5. Driveway getting rocked, garage floor being prepped for concrete pour, cabinets being delivered and installed, tile work underway, EIFS veneer being installed on exterior and interior trim carpentry being finished. It takes a village and love days when we can “kick it up a notch” and be this productive! More photos of interior finishes coming soon!

Kimbel Construction - Photos of the Week: Finished up a smaller basement remodel for a repeat client earlier this month and I have to say the BEFORE and AFTER stairway photo is incredible! Another fantastic job by our carpenters turning an otherwise useless area under the stairs into a gorgeous bourbon bar. Great design with maple cabinetry, stunning countertop and tile work with lighted floating shelves. You would be correct to say that the client LOVED IT and so did we!

Kimbel Construction - Photos of the Week: Our latest new custom home project is starting to rise up out of the ground and wow is it big! With close to 10K square feet and a little over 132’ wide, she has a pretty big footprint. Steel package is starting to disappear into the framing, so I know we are making progress. Looking forward to some better weather soon so we can make even quicker progress on mechanical installations and exterior veneers. This house is going to be stunning when complete, so stay tuned for more updates!

Kimbel Construction – Big News Day: Excited to announce that I officially hired someone to assist Kelly and I in the office with administrative duties. It’s basically been Kelly and/or I since day one 24 years ago, but with plans to grow and more than enough work coming in for both of us to handle on our own, we realized that help was needed soon. After carefully thinking about who would be a good hire, we remembered that a showroom consultant we loved to work with at Ferguson recently left her position to be closer to family in Illinois and thought she just might be the right person we needed. Yes, she is in Illinois, but now that we all are all used to working on Zoom and Teams, working remotely is the new norm and being that we needed mostly administrative work, we saw no concerns. I called this person up around New Years and wouldn’t you know it, she was very intrigued and interested in the position and after a few more conversations, we agreed on terms and officially hired Beth Byers to be a part of the Kimbel team!

Beth says: “I’m so excited to be joining the Kimbel Construction team! After working with them as a vendor for several years, I was impressed by the caliber of homes they build and the caliber of people Vince and Kelly are. I have loved working with them as a vendor and know it will be a lot of fun working beside them in this next step of my career.

I met Vince and Kelly as a showroom consultant for plumbing fixtures, working with their clients on selections. Prior to that, I worked as a Kitchen and Bath designer providing cabinetry, appliances, lighting, countertops, and tile. In addition, I also worked for a residential builder with a lot of focus on interior trim parts, millwork, lockout materials, doors, and windows. Looking forward to learning the Kimbel processes and how all these materials and trades come together to make each client's dream home.”

Today is Beth’s first day working remotely and we are so happy to have her working alongside us (even if it is in Illinois) and we look forward to the future as she becomes more acquainted with our operations and gets to know our entire Kimbel team. Everyone is going to absolutely love working with Beth as she has that friendly, caring and helpful demeanor that lends itself nicely to working with our clients.

Many of you already know Beth from working with her as a showroom consultant on your own Kimbel project, so let’s all give her a warm welcome!

Kimbel Construction - New Home Update: It’s been too long since I posted, so time for a quick update on one of our two new home projects underway. I don’t know if I’m supposed to be building a new home or a small commercial building, but looking at the steel in this house, it’s hard to tell! It took way too long to get the steel package due to supply chain issues, but now that it’s finally up, we can continue framing this 10K sq. ft. home (see attached photos). Looking forward to completing the framing so we can start mechanicals in a couple months when it’s a little warmer!

Hard to believe with everything that is happening in the world, demand for new home and remodeling projects is at an all time high as prices continue to rise to all time highs! Our business has been almost overwhelmed with multiple projects finishing, underway or coming up later this year and I think everybody including us is doing everything we can to work through supply chain issues and make everyone happy. It’s tough to do as we like others are all still learning how to navigate through these frustrating times. All I can ask is for everyone to be patient and be understanding with any industry struggling with supply chain issues. (Sure would be nice if we could manufacture more things here in the USA!)

Knowing all what we have upcoming, Kelly and I made the decision to close the schedule for any new projects for the rest of this calendar year. Basically if we don’t already have you in our queue, it’s going to be early to mid 2023 before we can get to your project. Didn’t want to necessarily do this, but I know when we need to say we can’t do anymore. If you have a upcoming project, feel free to contact us and we can either get your project added to our queue or refer you to someone who can assist sooner. Thank you to all of our great friends and clients who have helped make Kimbel Construction what it is today!

P.S. - Stay tuned next week as we have an important announcement and exciting news to tell everyone!

Kimbel Construction - New Home Build: Very blessed to have started a second new home this month as I worked with our excavators this past weekend to have it ready today for our foundation crew. On a home this size, we used a “CAT” and a “DEERE” to excavate a 4000+ square foot basement with a sunken golf room and Tim and Eric with Shewmaker Excavating did a great job! That was some of the best dirt I’ve seen in awhile and we were very lucky to dig 11’ deep on the main basement and 13’ on the sunken room and not hit any solid rock. Local architect Jim Peterson worked with our client to create this beautiful modern home design and we are anxious to share photos as it starts coming up out of the ground. Stay Tuned for future progress updates!

Kimbel Construction - Video of the Day: Most people don’t realize that by the time we start excavating a basement for a new home, we already have several hundred hours of work put into a project and starting the dig represents an exciting time for all. To capture that excitement, we take photos of the new homeowners on their lot with our gold shovel and we make a ceremonial toast with some sparkling grape juice that the whole family can enjoy before bringing in the big equipment to do the heavy lifting.

This particular home is the first of two large new projects we are starting this month. It’s 8500 square foot footprint on 5+ acres required a CAT 953 highlift and a CAT 318F excavator with a hammer. These machines make it look easy, but that’s because we use some of the best operators in the business. Their combined experience is over 60 years and it shows.

It’s going to be the busiest year I can ever remember with lots of projects underway, so stay tuned for more updates later this year!

Kimbel Construction - Video of the Day: I have for years surrounded myself with some of the best contractors in the industry and because we all sweat the details, I believe our projects are some of the best in Louisville. I saw this attached video and couldn’t help but think how this could be one of our carpenters making a sandwich with the same precision and attention to detail that they use when building an elaborate stairway. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Kimbel Construction - St. Matthews Renovation: Sometimes you have to go backwards before you can go forward and in this large whole house renovation/addition, we are making some major updates that have us tearing down quite a bit of the old house. The finished project will include gutting and renovating 1892 sq ft of existing space and adding 982 sq ft of new space. When complete, this project will have a completely new floor plan and will essentially be a new house from top to bottom including a new outdoor entertainment area and 16’x40’ fiberglass pool.

This isn’t your average remodel and not every remodeler can handle a project of this caliber, so I feel especially grateful to be working with this client on this enormous project. It’s going to be a beautiful house, so watch for future updates this coming spring and summer.
