When I became a mom 3 years ago, postpartum depression and rage took me and my husband for a spin. Between the suicidal thoughts, the explosive rage, the exhaustion, and my usual feelings of inadequacy and self doubt - I really almost didn’t survive it. It sounds so dramatic to put it into words this way, but if you or someone you love has gone through this, you know I’m not exaggerating. My heart was expanding to fit the love and chaos of having a kid. My world was turned upside down. And my body and mental health went haywire. I will never be able to say enough thank yous to my community that showed up and rallied so I could stay. Baking for PSI is a Penny’s Pie Shop tradition for this reason - you are not alone. Please know I am with you, and if you ever need someone to listen I am here. Please reach out - I’ll bring the pie!

I haven’t posted here in a while - sorry! Refocusing on home, health, family, balance…To be honest it is hard to post about pies in the midst of current events. Truthfully, it is hard to do most things in the midst of current events. I know I should be making resolutions, talking about last year’s milestones, setting goals and channeling a “growth mindset,” but instead I’m just going to say this: I know I will bake a ton of pies in the year 2026 - and I hope out of those pies grows community, courage, kindness, softness, empathy, connection. I don’t know yet how that might happen. I don’t have grand plans to fix things. I can’t promise a softer world for my daughter, but I sure am trying to hold on to hope.

Anyway, thank you for being here. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for trying new flavors. Thank you for supporting my tiny baby business. Thank you for supporting what I’m trying to do here - even when it’s messy and unclear. Here’s to more pies and more sweetness!

As the cold weather (finally) sets in, I’ve been thinking a lot about slowing down and refocusing on my family, my immediate community, smaller bakes, and more snuggles with Penny. I’ve learned this year that starting a business means sacrificing lots of things, and while I’ve been lucky to grow and hold on to my favorite things at the same time, I am also looking to deliberately stay small. I don’t know if that makes sense. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m not in a hurry for Penny’s Pie Shop to grow bigger than what it is now - a small cottage bakery with a lot of heart operated by a toddler mom who is pulled in a lot of directions every day. Business interwoven with family life, my house full of flour, butter, fruits, but also puzzles, Legos, school lunches, and just so much life - sometimes it feels like we are bursting at the seams.

All that just to say: thank you for coming along with me on this ride. I am so grateful for each of you. For showing up to try new flavors, for tuning into my “stories,” for encouraging me to keep going, for connecting with me beyond our pie transactions, for giving me grace when I show up to markets frazzled with one last working brain cell 😂

I will be slowing down a little in the winter months, but never fear! Rest is when the most creativity happens, and I’d love to invite you along to taste test with me through the winter months! Some of you have already signed up - THANK YOU! There is still time to sign up - this is your invitation to be in my inner circle and be the first to try out new flavors/products that might make it to the farmer’s market next year.
