Commissioned birthday cake: Cardamom Cake with Pistachios, Lemon Rose Water Buttercream, and Lemon White Chocolate Ganache. Not something I would personally eat (I’m not a fan of, and am actually allergic to, pistachios), but I think it turned out beautifully. I was a bit worried the rose water would be overpowering in the lemon buttercream, but I used a light amount and it’s actually quite pleasant! And yes, those are dried, edible rose petals as a decorative finish.

These cookies may look rather unassuming, but they pack a wallop of spicy, gingery flavor: Ginger Molasses Sourdough Cookies with Chocolate Chunks. So good. Probably one of my favorite cookies I’ve made so far this year. And… here’s the amazing thing: they’re GLUTEN-FREE! Made with gluten-free sourdough discard. Recipe by Aran Goyoaga, the absolute maven of gluten-free baking. I don’t even need to eat gluten-free, and I love her recipes. This batch is headed by mail to my manager’s home for her birthday this week (she’s not GF either, but she loves ginger, spices, etc). I love working with her and am only too happy to send a box of treats to her for her birthday. Happy, happy birthday, Christy!

Rhubarb Tres Leches Cake, recipe from . Not the greatest photo, but I had to share, because it’s so yummy. The recipe calls for this to be made in a 9” cake pan; I used a springform pan so I could remove the sides and cut the pieces neatly. I think it may be better made in a 9” square pan with a removable bottom. I also did not use all of the milk soak (I may use the remainder in iced coffee). I used our own harvested rhubarb which I sadly needed to tint with some red food coloring, as it was pretty green.

Overall? Delicious recipe - one of the milks used in the soak is coconut milk, which adds a great flavor component in contrast to the sweet, tangy rhubarb. This is a keeper (with some measurement adjustments). Given the healthy harvest we’re getting on our rhubarb, I will be making it again this season. (For those curious, the pretty red dusting on top is ground hibiscus leaves.)

Milk Bread Green Onion Babka. Oh my, this is delicious. Charred green onions sautéed in soy sauce and sesame oil with just a hint of sugar, swirling through a plush, soft, heavenly bread, with a generous smattering of sesame seeds. Surprisingly easy to make too. Recipe by the ever-brilliant - from her masterful book SIFT.

Did a little baking this weekend. Struggling big-time with my first sourdough attempt (grrr 😖) but these Jammy Coconut Chess Squares from my baking pal ‘s wonderful book, “Potluck Desserts” are amazing. Justin gives you the option to swirl the creamy coconut custard layer with any jam you like - I opted for blackberry. These will be put in regular cookie rotation; they’re dreamy. 🏳️‍🌈❤️

I’ve been a coffee drinker since I was a kid; it’s just in our blood. My mother made these Mocha Chip Squares all the time when I was a kid, and all of us in our family LOVED them. The recipe is from her Better Homes & Gardens cookbook from the 1960s (you know the one: red and white gingham pattern on the cover; 3-ring bound), and it is the epitome of desserts of that era: gelatin, whipped egg whites, instant coffee, whipped cream - chopped chocolate chips and walnuts folded in and poured in a dish to set into a cloud like, melt-in-your-mouth treat.

I did a bit of a revamp, adding a chocolate graham crust. It felt like it needed a base to it. I toasted the walnuts and kept them out of the mixture, as they always seemed to get soggy. Instead, I used them as part of the garnish on top. I shared it with my sisters this weekend and we agreed the Mocha Chip Squares 2.0 was a good revamp! I think Mom would approve. And they still remain a favorite nostalgic dessert! 💜☕️

I think pretty much every loaf of pumpkin bread - or butternut squash bread, in this case - could do with a heavy-handed drenching of salted brown butter glaze. Amazing recipe from .
