Sad post incoming...
No one tells you how hard it can be raising animals. You see all the love, the cute photos, the babies. What you don't see is the loss. The loss is so real and hard.
You work so hard raising chickens from babies or cats from kittens. And mother nature happens, unplanned circumstances take hold.
Last year we lost one of our cats, it was very devastating and the loss was really hard for the whole family.
This year we've had to put down a couple of chickens. Which is the humane thing to do sometimes. Yesterday I went outside and one of my lavendar orphingtons (which are honestly the sweetest chickens ever) had a pr*****ed vent. For non chicken people this is where the egg comes out. There was absolutely no way to save her and I am not one to allow my animals to suffer. So, in these cases the humane thing to do is put them down.
I cried, Jimmy nuzzled close and let me pet her for a while after... I think maybe she knew I was upset. They're not just chickens, they are all so fun and have personalities. We have raised them all from chicks and truly love having them on the farm.
All of this to say, you guys see all the exciting, fun things that happen on our little farm. But this is a real post, the hard part of having animals. The loss hurts, even losing the birds. But this is farm life and it won't be the last loss. All we can do is continue to push forward and keep pouring our love into what we are building here.
