Happy 10 years to us! 🎉🎉🎉
Here’s to celebrating not only 10 years, but also the biggest opportunity we’ve ever had to share Verdie’s love with even more people. ❤️🥧
I can still close my eyes and smell Sundays at my mother’s house — smothered chicken, pot roast, or pork chops slow cooking, a big pot of collard greens mixed with cabbage, fresh-shelled black-eyed peas, corn, cornbread, and peach cobbler. Those rich aromas filled the Barrett house every Sunday after church.
My mother believed in big Sunday dinners. Cooking brought her peace, joy, and purpose. She was an exceptional cook, and it didn’t matter what dish she prepared — she never needed a recipe. Cooking was simply her gift, and she loved seeing people enjoy her food, especially her peach cobblers.
As the youngest of six children, I was always right beside her — her little shadow in the kitchen. I know I probably got underfoot more times than I can count, but those moments became some of my greatest lessons. Watching her cook taught me not only the art of cooking, but also how food can bring comfort, love, and connection to others.
My mother, Verdie, passed away in 2009, and I still miss her dearly. But she left me something priceless — her passion for cooking and baking. I often say that I pour a little bit of Verdie’s love into every cobbler I make.
Using my mother’s old-fashioned recipes, I started Verdie’s Cobblers in 2016 on the six-burner stove in my own kitchen. What began as a small dream has grown beyond anything I could have imagined. Much of that growth has come through word of mouth — loyal customers sharing my cobblers with family, friends, and their communities. There’s nothing more powerful than people who genuinely love and support what you do.
Made from scratch, rich in flavor, reasonably priced, and baked with more than a pinch of love — every cobbler carries a piece of my mother’s legacy.
From her hands to mine. ❤️
