Are the figs ready? I'm so excited!
Michael Adler Growing Papaya in Our Area Thank you Bernadette for seedlings “Papayas are a tropical fruit from Southern Mexico and Central America, that has recently been ruled native to the Florida Everglades as well. The fruit produced by wild papayas in South Florida are usually of very low quality. Papayas are fast-growing, short-lived, tree-like herbaceous plants. In Gainesville, large potted plants should be set out in Spring, after the danger of frost has passed. If growing conditions are sufficient, and the freezing weather late enough, you can get ripe fruits. Otherwise, using them green is nice too. Soil: Use very fertile soil with large amounts of organic matter and a thick layer of mulch Water: Make sure it always has plenty of water Sun: Full! The more the better Cold: Freezing temperatures are lethal, but papayas can sometimes resprout from stumps. Pruning: Papayas rarely need pruning. If more than 2-3 sprouts regrow from a frozen stump, some should be removed. Propagation: seeds and tissue culture Pests: There's a giant caterpillar that can do impressive amounts of damage to the leaves. They usually don't come often. In south FL, there's a fly that lays eggs in the fruits. The activity of the larvae ruins the fruit. Other problems: Papayas are short-lived. Do not expect it to last longer than 5 years. If you take good enough care of your tree, the fruits will probably start ripening in early winter, which puts them at risk of frost-damage. You may not get any ripe fruits if winter comes early, if your transplants aren't big enough, or if you don't take good enough care of them. Most old papaya varieties are diecious, meaning that male and female flowers occur on separate individuals. You won't know which are which until they start flowering. You will need both genders in order to produce fruits. If you plant 3 plants, your risk of having all the same gender is 1/4. Four plants reduces that risk to 1/8. Some newer varieties produce complete flowers and are self-fertile. In Hawaii, the ringspot virus nearly destroyed the industry until two varieties were genetically engineered to be resistant to the virus. Papayas are probably too scarce in North Central Florida for this to be a problem. Harvesting, storage, and preparation: Papayas will ripen off the plant if they are sufficiently mature, but they must have begun to change color (not the pale spot where they touch the other fruits). Ripe papayas can be enjoyed fresh, frozen, dried, and in many other ways. Green papayas can be grated to make salads or cut in pieces and fermented to make pickles. Any fruits that are not harvested when freezing weather arrives will be ruined. Forecasts are not always accurate, so this entails risk either way.” Thank you Faye 🧚🏼‍♀️ M&F FARMette for sharing papaya info. Thank you Frog Song Organics for papaya image. I like it better than FreePik. High Springs Orchard & Bakery it’s probably y’alls papayas.

Hi is the farm open for picking?
Kicking off "Local Food Week" with some serious love for local seeds, adapted varieties, and winter squash!! We're crazy about winter squashes! If you missed our Pumpkin Tasting Pop-Up last fall that's really too bad...BUT you can grow some of the great-tasting varieties we showcased! They are all acclimated to growing in our conditions and have excellent flavor, lending themselves to so many yummy things! From pumpkin cheese cake and panna cotta (perfected by The Fat Tuscan Cafe!!) to pumpkin Boba cha cha a (coconut pumpkin bubble drink mastered by High Springs Orchard & Bakery), pumpkin ale (brewed by Cypress & Grove Brewing Co.), Seminole Pumpkin ice cream (kuddos to Chef Justin Langer!) and classic soul warming soups and roasted squash.....these beauties are a staple in our gardens and kitchens. Check out our upcoming seed dispersals starting February 15th, and grow your own! If you can't, be sure to support your local farmers that are! #localfoodweek #ILoveLocalFoodWeek #SeedSaving #ILoveLocalFood
Awesome event! Our local chefs and businesses showed up and put out a great spread of pumpkin food. We were honored to have guest chefs David and Jane all the way from Singapore who showed up to share two of their cultural dishes using pumpkin. S.picy P.umpkin A.sian M.unch and Bobo cha cha, a pumpkin coconut bubble dessert. Thank you so much Jenny of High Springs Orchard & Bakery for letting us spend some time with your lovely brother and sister in law. Wow! Jasmine with Farm Kitchen Collective had a mouthwatering pumpkin soup and cornbread that was so perfectly pumpkin. Eddie from Daily Greenhad his vegan pumpkin Mac n cheese that was so creative and delish. Justin from Hoggetowne Creamery featured a pumpkin spiced latte ice cream! Michelle from The Fat Tuscan Cafe had beautiful and spiced balanced pumpkin panna cotta, cheesecake, and a pumpkin pie. Working Food offered a fall harvest casserole, pumpkin roselle salad, and herbed calabaza hasslebacks. Our friend Mary Santello created a pumpkin kimchi that was so delicious. And finally Cypress & Grove Brewing Co.featured their deliciously balanced pumpkin forward beer! Delish! A huge thanks to all of our volunteers who helped us from beginning to end! We can’t thank these volunteers/businesses/chefs above for participating as you all are why this event was such a success. We are honored to be in a community where collaboration, creativity, and fellowship exist. We look forward to doing so much more around local farms, local food, and local chefs. #communitymatters #wow #workingfoodgnv #ediblegnv #eatgnv #gnveats #whyilovegnv #ncflpumpkintrail #ncfleats #gainesville #gainesvillefl #workingfood #pumpkinpopupgnv
