Find us at local markets and events in Northern Virginia that we post here! Welcome to Wooden Shoe Bakery, a labor of love inspired by generations of European baking tradition. With German and Danish heritage and parents/grandparents who were avid bakers, Both Sandy and I grew up surrounded by the comforting aroma of fresh bread and pastries. Our passion for baking deepened as we spent 6.5 years l

iving in the Netherlands, traveling throughout Europe, and experiencing the incredible variety of traditional breads and treats that have been perfected over centuries. Now retired, we find joy in bringing these time-honored flavors to our community in Haymarket, where we have settled to be close to our grandchildren. At Wooden Shoe Bakery, we embrace small-batch, traditional baking methods—nothing industrial, just real, handcrafted goodness. Our breads and treats are made from high-quality ingredients, sourced locally whenever possible, and never contain preservatives, conditioners, or stabilizers. A true taste of tradition, our sourdough is made using a special starter that came from a bakery in Amsterdam. When asked about its origins, the baker told me it had been passed down from a Parisian baker who simply called it "old." That deep history and character live on in every loaf we bake. We invite you to taste the difference that passion, tradition, and pure ingredients make.
