There will be eight family fun Saturdays this season and each one was chosen to really capture a different part of fall! ***there were sooo many ideas it was hard to narrow it down, but this lineup will be soo fun!

I love Zinnias! Learning the wiggle test to make sure they are ready to cut and trusting the process of cutting deep have been game changers! Who else loves Zinnias?!

It’s August, we’ve been tending to these plants all summer.Don’t give up now, most will bloom until frost! Even though we got a lot of rain by us last night, still feel the soil. Leaves can shed a lot of water. If it feels really wet, don’t water. If it feels just damp or dry, give it a drink because it’s going to be sunny today!

We learned so much about harvesting and arranging cut flowers from Michelle Long River Family Farm this morning in Mel’s garden. My takeaway? I need to cut way more of the plant that I usually do, at least up to my elbow! You sacrifice a few other flowers but you will be rewarded with longer stems on the next flowers.

Do your zinnia blooms flop when you put them in a vase? They were probably cut too early. Tap the stem with your scissors before you cut. The whole stem, including the flower should be stiff. If the flower flops then it’s not ready to pick.

Plants that are truly in the shade might not need water every day. In fact, in this heat, too much water may create rot issues, especially for begonias. So just feel the soil everyday, if it feels moist yet and the plant looks good, hold off on the water.
